Liverpool's Florian Wirtz scores a fantastic goal and registers an assist as he helps Germany pick up their first win under Jurgen Klopp.

The Jurgen Klopp era is finally under way as the German National Team get their first win under the former Liverpool boss against Serbia in Munich

One of the standout performers for the home side during this game was Liverpool's heavily criticised number 7, Florian Wirtz.

Klopp System Change

It was a change from the usual system that Klopp had used throughout his management career, and which got him the success he had at Liverpool.

But this appeared to be an attempt to get Wirtz into the game a little more, allowing him that central position while also surrounding him with the support and service that he needed in order to thrive, and he did just that.

Wirtz Heavily Involved

Germany opened the scoring just before half-time after a brilliant shot from LFC's German playmaker hit the post and fell perfectly to Tom Bischof, who buried the opportunity, putting his side 1-0 up in a crucial fixture for the former World Cup winners

After an opening draw to the Netherlands and a shock loss to Greece, Germany were at risk of being cut adrift and left at the bottom of their Nations League group if they failed to beat Serbia.

But cheered on by a nearly sold-out Allianz Arena, Jurgen Klopp's side were relentless, forcing six saves from Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic throughout the game, but Florian Wirtz would be the one to grab the second.

After a build-up piece of play from the hosts, playing quick one-touch passes out from the back, the ball fell to Maximilian Mittelstadt, who drove up the left-hand side.

He picked out Wirtz, who was in space in the penalty area, and the former Bayer Leverkusen superstar shifted the ball onto his right foot and calmly slotted it into the bottom right-hand corner, ensuring Germany would remain alive in their Nations League group.

Author's Verdict

A sensational performance from Florian Wirtz and one that will do him the world of good. It will also reassure Liverpool fans that the top-quality player that the Reds thought they signed in 2025 is very much still there.

And if Andoni Iraola can get him playing as he did against Serbia for his nation, then the true potential of the £116 million player will be unlocked.
