Why the midfield is a priority for Man Utd

Manchester United are on the brink of a revolutionary summer transfer rebuild. Reports suggest that the Reds have raised around £100 million in funds to splurge this summer, and bolstering in numerous positions is required to be competitive in next season's campaign.

A pair of new fullbacks, a striker, and another winger are desired for this summer's transfer window, but a position of paramount importance is the midfield position.

With Casemiro confirming his exit earlier this season and the expected departure of Manuel Ugarte after he failed to make an impact on the squad, a new defensive midfielder is likely to be the first acquisition of the window.

An up-and-coming Premier League star has emerged on the radar of several Premier League clubs, with Chelsea and United being two of the names, and both clubs will enter a battle to secure his signature.

Carrick wants Scott

United interim manager Michael Carrick has vastly improved the club's trajectory since he was appointed in January, and will likely be named the permanent successor of the former United gaffer Rúben Amorim.

With plans supposedly in place to keep Carrick, the recruitment team will be hard at work to ensure he has sufficient quality within the squad, as well as a plethora of squad depth.

That means two or three midfielders are required to complete this mission, and the first name Carrick has endorsed is Bournemouth's Alex Scott, who has emerged as one of the Premier League's top young talents as he has guided the Cherries to Champions League qualification territory, an unforeseen achievement for Bournemouth.

According to TeamTalk, United have been keeping tabs on Scott extensively throughout 2026, as his form has been consistently improving. Since arriving from Bristol City in 2023, Scott has become a pivotal part of Bournemouth's setup and has been named April player of the month for the Cherries.

Scott has also been named in England Boss Thomas Tuchel's 55-man provisional squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Though it's likely the 22-year-old will be a nailed-on starter, his impact on the team may become vital.

United will have to fend off other suitors like Chelsea and Liverpool, who believe Scott is a crucial figure in English football's future landscape. TeamTalk has marked Scott at £50 million, a fee which many clubs will view as a steal.

Carrick's love for Scott

Scott has certainly captured the attention of the 44-year-old manager. Reports suggest that Scott is a player "Carrick has a deep affection for and hugely admires."

The England international was widely regarded as one of England's next big talents before his move to Bournemouth, where it took time to become a mainstay in the first team, and he has continued that progression over the course of this season.

Therefore, Scott has been named in the midfield shortlist compiled by the Reds recruitment team, which includes sought-after players such as Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, who are expected to be on the move this summer.

Speculation remains as to whether Scott would be the ideal signing, Kobbie Mainoo's resurgence means he will keep his place for next season's campaign, and he needs a more defensive-minded partner to help recover the ball. Scott isn't necessarily that type of player.

It may be viable to use Scott in rotation with Mainoo, as the club's total number of games next season will take a steep increase, but the £50 million price tag may deter the club from doing so.
