The match officials for the tied ODI between Sri Lanka and India “misinterpreted” the rules which resulted in them not taking the match to the Super Over, ESPN Cricinfo reported.
According to the details, the on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Raveendra Wimalasiri, match referee Ranjan Madugalle, third umpire Paul Reiffel and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge, acknowledged having misinterpreted the ODI rules which state that in case of a tie, teams would contest a Super Over to produce an outcome.
I think the situation with the tied ODI match between Sri Lanka and India is quite unfortunate. I believe that the misinterpretation of the rules by the match officials, leading to the match not going into a Super Over as per the ICC guidelines, was a mistake that could have been avoided. It's essential for match officials to be well-versed in the rules and ensure that the correct procedures are followed to maintain the integrity and fairness of the game.
