De Zerbi reunites with Van Hecke? Spurs eye Brighton's defensive powerhouse, a rising star whose midfield bursts and leadership redefine the modern centre-back.
Jan Paul Van Hecke has been linked with a move to Tottenham.
A storyline that could well exist from now until the end of the long summer, as former Albion head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, takes over the club from North London. Van Hecke has been a standout player for Brighton again this season and is pushing for his own Player of the Season title over the previous one.
How good is Van Hecke?
Last season, he clean swept the awards ceremony, accumulating both Player’s player and Fan’s player of the Season. Deservedly so, we are talking about a modern Dutch international footballer who is rapidly becoming the ideal successor to the local current legend, Lewis Dunk.
Defensively, his ability is unquestioned. From last-ditch challenges to keeping top strikers like Erling Haaland at bay have become almost expected. Despite only being 25-years-old, his maturity on the pitch is outstanding. To say Van Hecke is Brighton’s best player isn’t unpopular. In fact, his significance is proved by every passing game. Keeping Albion in games has become his forte, but his qualities stretch beyond that. He’s everything you want from a modern defender.
Comfortable on the ball, able to progress forward and pass accurately. De Zerbi even played him in midfield many moons ago! His ability to be composed is one thing, but his bursts through midfield are another. He can create chances, whip a lethal ball into the box, and contribute to goals himself. When discussing modern centre-backs, they tend to lack a similar thing: leadership.
To put it very bluntly, Van Hecke doesn’t. As aforementioned, future captain material. The sort of player who’d put his body on the line for the football club, and be onside with the fans, as if he owes them something. Van Hecke is an ideal centre-back for any side, but particularly progressive sides like De Zerbi’s teams. Ultimately, De Zerbi started this.
Where did it all start?
When Van Hecke first came to the club, his ability was uncertain. He was almost let go by the club before an impressive breakout under the Italian head coach! He knew his game and understood his profile better than anyone else at the club. He knew that Van Hecke was a brute force defender, but he also saw the opportunity to play the risky game, too. It all started when Albion faced Manchester City.
City were already champions, and De Zerbi decided to play Van Hecke in that risky way… bombing into midfield and disrupting patterns. It worked magnificently, and his last-ditch abilities mitigated the lethal Haaland up front.
He kept him quiet, despite the Norwegian scoring in that game. It was remembered as a monumental moment for JP, and simply, nobody has looked back since.
His progressive play alongside Levi Colwill enabled a moment of magic from Julio Enciso, which even placed 2nd in the Puskas Awards for the best goal of the year. Jan Paul Van Hecke is certainly one to watch.
His contract expires in 2027, and with all the earlier-mentioned qualities, there is no surprise that other clubs will be looking at him.
Realistically, he probably deserves his big move. But, with all things considered, a stay at the club would be invaluable for not only the fans, but the imminent future of Brighton & Hove Albion.
