Biden: Sweden should join NATO 'without delay'

Apr 4, 2023 7:38 PM

US President Joe Biden has now urged Turkey and Hungary - both of whom oppose the move - to welcome Sweden to the North Atlantic Alliance "without delay".

It comes after Finland formally joined the military alliance this afternoon.

Mr Biden has pressed Hungary and Turkey to conclude their ratification processes for Sweden to join as soon as possible.
"I look forward to welcoming Sweden as a NATO member as soon as possible," he said in a statement.

In order for a country to join NATO, all 31 member states must unanimously agree to extend an invitation.
