Russia uses religion as a weapon in the war against Ukraine - ISW
The American Institute for the Study of War notes that some representatives of the UOC-MP directly supported Russian troops after the invasion in 2014 and in 2022, providing their buildings for military warehouses, garrisons, field hospitals, and even combat positions. At the same time, Moscow is trying to present the UOC-MP as a victim of "repression" by Ukraine.
The ISW does not rule out the possibility that on the eve of Orthodox Easter, which will be celebrated on April 16, Russia will again call for a truce, just as it did on Christmas.
"Putin may call for a ceasefire to portray Ukraine as intransigent and unwilling to take the necessary steps for negotiations," the institute notes, adding that Kyiv's potential refusal will contribute to Russia's information operation regarding the so-called "religious oppression" in Ukraine.
