Girl, 13, sent to orphanage for drawing anti-war picture leaves with mum
A 13-year-old Russian girl who was sent to a children's home after drawing an anti-war picture has been taken out of the orphanage by her mother.
Her father, single parent Alexei Moskalyov, was sentenced to two years in a penal colony for discrediting the armed forces over the incident, and Maria did not want to stay with her mother, Olga, who had not lived with the family for years.
Hours before a hearing was to be held on the parental rights of Mr Moskalyov, Olga collected Maria from social care after the girl change her mind, according to the children's commissioner.
Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova said Maria "did not want to go to her mother at first, and her opinion is legally required to be taken into account".
She said: "Now her position has changed – she told me this herself on the phone.
"Olga has already taken Masha from the social rehabilitation centre.
"Let's hope that everything will work out for mom and daughter."
Ms Lvova-Belova posted a picture of the girl and her mother together.
For context: The drawing featured a Ukrainian flag with the words "glory to Ukraine" and a Russian tricolour with the slogan "no to war".
