Well, if the Los Angeles Dodgers were looking to make a big splash at the Winter Meetings, then they might be lining up something big...really big.
Would you believe that the Dodgers are reportedly looking to get two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, the fire-balling pitcher from the Detroit Tigers?
That's some of the scuttlebutt coming out of Monday's official first day of the big get-together where MLB general managers and front office personnel gather together.
A report from KTLA sports anchor David Pingalore, who is in Orlando for the Winter Meetings, indicates that Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman might be cooking up something.
"Here's the deal, here's what I'm hearing," Pingalore said. "Right now, Friedman trying to work a deal in a major trade for Tarik Skubal. Best pitcher in baseball, plays for the Tigers. He's a free agent after next year. Tigers want to get rid of him and get as much for him as possible.
"But it certainly looks like he's going to end up somewhere," Pingalore reported. "Dodgers would be odds-on favorite to get him. They got the capital and they got the players. ... They got a lot of young pitchers as well. And Skubal is going to be demanding somewhere in free agency $300 or $400 million.
"This could all happen here at the meetings," he said. "This could drop at any time here in Orlando."
How good is Skubal? Very good, better than very good. He's incredible.
Last season, Skubal was 13-6 with an anemic 2.21 ERA. He started 31 games for the Tigers and finished the 2025 MLB season with a WHIP of 0.891. Oh yes, he also struck out 241 hitters as well.
In 2024, Skubal struck out 228 batters, finished with an 18-4 record, and posted a 2.39 ERA.
Could Skubal find a place wearing Dodger blue? Dodgers fans would flock to Dodger Stadium for every single one of his starts, packing the stadium from top to bottom. Already in Dodger Stadium, stars from movies and television flock in droves.
With Skubal on the mound, though, things might reach a fever pitch. Tinseltown remembers "Fernando Mania" when the late, great Fernando Valenzuela drew packed houses and wildly enthusiastic crowds in his heyday.
If Friedman and Dodgers general manager Brendan Gomes are able to make this blockbuster deal happen, then the entire future of the Dodgers' franchise just might shift.
A deal for Skubal also would put Los Angeles in some prime real estate to pick up their third straight World Series championship.
The possibilities with a guy like Skubal are endless. This will be something worth watching over the next few days.
