Talk about the rich getting richer, Dodgers fans. Is it much of a stretch to think that fire-balling Detroit Tigers right-hander Tarik Skubal might wear Dodger Blue at some point this coming season?
Don't be too surprised if it happens. Pull up a chair because longtime MLB general manager Jim Bowden has some thoughts on Skubal's future.
Let's be frank. Skubal has earned a big-money MLB contract due to his incredible efforts for the Tigers. He's going to enter free agency at some point. Detroit, which has shown a fantastic comeback over the past two seasons under manager A.J. Hinch, have ridden Skubal's coattails in doing it.
But the clock is ticking toward potentially seeing Skubal walk to another club that can afford his financial desires.
Who has deep pockets? You better believe the Los Angeles Dodgers do.
"The Tigers have told teams that they are not expecting to trade Tarik Skubal this offseason, but the main difference between their position and the one taken by the Pirates vis-à-vis Skenes is that the Tigers will listen to offers for Skubal," Bowden wrote for The Athletic. "Once they get that overwhelming offer — which they will — they’ll likely have no choice but to trade him."
Bowden's comments regarding Skenes relate to the fact that the Pittsburgh Pirates have no interest in trading their stellar starter at all.
"The Tigers have no chance of signing Skubal to a long-term extension this winter unless their next proposal is an offer that would make him the highest-paid pitcher in MLB, and not by a little but by a lot," Bowden wrote.
"It’s unlikely they make that offer," he added. "Waiting until the July trade deadline to deal Skubal would be foolish because, in all likelihood, the Tigers will be in the postseason race and the return would probably be less than what they’d get this winter.
"Expect the big-market teams with strong farm systems and the financial wherewithal to sign Skubal long-term to make their interest known, teams like the Yankees, Blue Jays, Red Sox, Giants and, yes, the Dodgers."
Notice that last team Bowden mentioned? Could you see Skubal taking the mound with a raucous Dodger Stadium crowd roaring its approval? It could just happen.
Do not be surprised at all if Skubal does wear the Dodger uniform at some point. He'd be an excellent fit right into the rotation immediately. Skubal, Yamamoto, Snell, etc. Holy cow, talk about a Dodgers fan's dreams coming alive.
Just wait and see what, if anything, the Dodgers might do regarding talks with the Tigers at the upcoming Winter Meetings. It might not result in a deal made at that point. Yet the seeds could be planted for a potential deal. The Dodgers have assets that could go to Detroit, even if it hurts a little bit in the short run.
Oh boy, Dodgers fans. Get ready for seeing a 100-mph pitch from Skubal sear off the outside corner of the plate against an opponent.
