Heim, who is now on the market after getting non-tendered by the Texas Rangers, could provide a team like the Giants with another backstop if needed.

The San Francisco Giants have Patrick Bailey firmly placed at catcher right now, but teams could always use another handy catcher on their roster.

As of Friday, another name has popped up on the free agent market and deserves at least a look.

Jonah Heim, who played a part in leading the Texas Rangers to a World Series championship in 2023, was non-tendered by the Rangers on Friday. He's a player who will be getting attention from some teams in need of a veteran catcher.

Because of his postseason experience, though, he might be a good pickup for the Giants, too.

According to an article from The Athletic, Heim is a switch-hitting catcher. He's two years removed from an All-Star campaign. But his offensive numbers have gone down. Last season, Heim played in 124 games for Texas, with his .213/.271/.332 line mirroring his 2024 production.

That's not going to set the world on fire from an offensive standpoint. Yet there is a history of MLB players who find another gear when they get into a different environment.

It's possible that Heim would be able to do so under first-year Giants manager Tony Vitello and his staff.

As the article from The Athletic points out, Heim's experience behind the plate could make him a bounce-back candidate for a team looking to bolster its catching depth.

A number of teams, such as the Tampa Bay Rays, are going to look into adding some depth at catcher.

Bailey has proven himself to be a great asset for the Giants.

Yet wouldn't it be great for Bailey to have a player like Heim to help guide him through any tough times he faces both on offense and defense?

A league source indicated to The Athletic that the Rangers sought trade partners for Heim along with teammate Adolis García, who also was non-tendered by Texas.

García, a two-time American League All-Star, a 2023 American League Championship Series MVP, and a World Series champion, too, is available on the market. Maybe San Francisco president of baseball operations Buster Posey takes a look at him, too.

Back to Heim. He's available and will help some team improve at the catcher's spot. Why not San Francisco, who might be able to get Heim on a deal that works for him and the franchise? It'll be something worth watching as the Winter Meetings start up in a couple of weeks.
