When San Francisco brought in Tony Vitello to become the Giants' new manager, San Francisco fans were probably hoping he could bring in some type of change.
That's still remaining to be seen as the Giants will head to Spring Training in a little over 60 days. Yes, San Francisco fans, we're getting a little closer.
While that's going on, San Francisco president of baseball operations Buster Posey might be up to something. Could the Giants be a landing spot for free agent shortstop Bo Bichette?
According to a trusted voice and veteran presence around the major leagues, the Giants are one of three teams that could be in the race for the former Toronto Blue Jays' shortstop. Bichette is on the market now, looking for a new deal.
Longtime MLB general manager and executive Jim Bowden, in a new article for The Athletic, listed the Giants, Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox as the three best matches for Bichette this offseason.
"Bichette is only 27 and can play second base, shortstop or third base," Bowden wrote. He’s led the AL in hits twice already and is a really focused, hard-working player who would become an instant fan favorite in Boston.
"Fenway Park’s unusual dimensions — with the Green Monster in left and the short porch in right — would benefit Bichette, who uses the whole field well," according to Bowden. "The Red Sox could make him their everyday third or second baseman.
"If the Blue Jays don’t sign Kyle Tucker, it is likely Bichette will return to Toronto (assuming he hasn’t signed by the time Tucker does)," Bowden added. "I also think he’d be a huge get for the Giants.
"Though many teams view him as a second or third baseman, his favorite position to play is shortstop," he continued. "His best fits for teams in need of a shortstop would be the Brewers, but it doesn’t appear Milwaukee is looking for that big of an investment at this point."
On that Brewers note, that ballclub is very much known as an organization which truly watches its payroll situation. They're not going to put up a ton of cash for a player unless it's a wise investment.
Bichette is represented by Vayner Sports, an agency founded by advertising and marketing leader Gary Vaynerchuk. Vayner Sports has been making a name for itself in the player representation field, so Bichette is in good hands.
Last season, in helping the Blue Jays reach the 2025 World Series where they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bichette had a slash line of .311/.480/.843 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs. He's played his entire seven-season MLB career with the Blue Jays.
Also, Bichette has two All-Star appearances to his name.
So, what will Posey and Giants management do when it comes to Bichette? They will need to make a decision pretty soon if Bichette is still on the market.
