One of the changes made by BBS was to replace the buying of posts using community currencies with the promotion of posts using reputations.
This is not a change that I like. I think there are many other users who prefer the buying of posts using community currencies.
Yes there were faults in the old system (especially in the early days of BBS) that needed to be changed. The ability to earn cashables from price appreciation of posts was manipulated by buying and selling posts to Jack up prices and earn cashables along the way. Putting a stop to this was a very good decision.
However the buying of a good post to earn advertising revenue while being the current owner of the post is good. I am sure there are BBS users who remember the "Good Old Days" and the excitement of buying posts especially pinned posts announcing changes! Such posts will be read by people and will generate impressions. So they were good posts to buy in order to get a share of the advertising revenue. What needed to be changed was the revenue sharing ratio between the publisher and the current owner. At that time revenue was shared equally between the publisher and the current owner. Publishing a post requires much effort whereas buying a post requires just pressing a few buttons. So the publisher of posts deserve to get a bigger share of the revenue. A 75%:25% is IMO better than a 50-50 split. Another reason why I think that giving current owners small share (20% instead of 25% as proposed above is also fine) is not not everyone is good at writing. So those who are not good a writing can contribute to communities by reading posts and buying them. The suggestion that was made by several people that the opening of posts to read is required before one can buy the post was a good suggestion. Under the system of buying posts to be the current owner entitled to a share of the advertising revenue gave purpose to community currencies. Reputations in the current system are superfluous or of no real value. What do the promoter of posts get? - more of the useless reputations. The uselessness of reputations is such that many users do not bother to log in to many of the boards they joined in order to collect the 5 reputations bonus each day. If we revert back to community currencies that is used to buy posts, the incentive to log in to boards is there. This daily logging in to collect bonus will help to improve the traffic statistics of boards.
