I can say without a doubt that the majority of new users join a BBS board with zero idea how the boards work, why BBS is different from the other Social Media sites it resembles, and what the overall goals of BBS are.
In my experience, new users use the “see what sticks” method of posting, which is usually low effort content (or a copy of the lowest effort content allowed) and the individual board Admins/mods are charged with educating the new users. In my community that education is usually met with resistance at the very least. In most cases it leads to site drama before the users finally understand BBS goals, or the ban of said users. Many of those banned users return with alternate accounts and cause site drama crying that the content rules are too strict or that their “freedom of speech” is being infringed. We have had endless issues, with countless users since January due to what I believe is a deficiency in educating new users before they hit the boards.
New users should absolutely have an idea of what BBS is and what it’s goals are prior to joining a board and prior to any activity on the boards. Currently the system is heavily reliant upon the site Admins/mods to educate the new users which, if we are talking about the scalability of BBS, will be unmanageably difficult when the app is released and usership increases as expected.
BTW, If you’d all like to see a community where the users don’t care about cryptocurrency or making profit visit StarWarsTheory.com. The majority of the users there would like to treat the site like a fan site and hang out (which is a problem unto itself). Disingenuous activity is nearly non-existent.
