Editor’s note: EU CONFERENCES
Here in Europe, 3 upcoming conferences that you shouldn’t miss:
- French cannabis: Next week, here in Bordeaux is the Science in the City conference. Taking place on Sept 11th & 12th, it gathers a host of excellent speakers on cannabis topics at the lovely Cité du Vin. I’ll see you there.
- German canna-business: I’ll be at the CB Expo in Dortmund, Germany on Sept 18th to 20th. It’s a great place for networking, business & regulatory development & they have a wide range of educational tracks. I’m taking the train across Europe for this one.
- Portuguese medical cannabis: In Lisbon, the PTMC Portugal Medical Cannabis Conference will be on Sept 25th & 26th. Hosted by the excellent Laura Ramos of CannaReporter, they’ve a strong array of speakers as well as a training program for doctors.
(Portugal is one of the biggest players in European cannabis & I so wish that I was going to this one, but my wife is at a conference & I’ve got the kids. So it goes. Have a Beirão & a smoke for me).

Aging

Using neuroimaging public health data, the brain network configuration of cannabis usage & healthy aging overlapped
Neural Signatures of Cannabis Use: Reversing Cognitive Aging via Whole-Brain Functional Network Connectivity
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40766216/
“Notably, cannabis users exhibited superior performance across multiple cognitive domains, and interestingly, the effects of cannabis and cognition are presented concurrently across a range of brain systems. In conclusion, our study offers valuable insights into the potential influence of cannabis on brain aging and cognitive performance. The results suggest that cannabis users display brain network characteristics typically associated with younger brains, along with enhanced cognitive abilities, highlighting a potential modulatory role for cannabinoids and endocannabinoids in neurodegenerative processes, as explained through neural dedifferentiation and compensation theories.”

Novel Studies

(my grab bag section for intriguing studies or stuff I haven’t quite seen before)

In France, the majority of cannabis users surveyed expressed willingness to use a drug checking service for their cannabis products (for things like THC levels, synthetic cannabinoids, pathogens, pesticides & heavy metals)
Willingness to use a drug checking service for cannabis and cannabis-based products: results from an online survey of people who regularly use cannabis in France
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40684160/
As a resident of France, I’d certainly use that service too. But like many drug checking services, people are likely to just ignore any negative results. I've got few options for weed here, so I'm basically in 'I'll take what I can get' mode.
I know it tastes like pesticides. What else can I do besides wait for the government to legalize it around the time my 4-year-old will leave for college?

A reported 5.3 million plants were seized. As a result of the actions, 5,764 arrests were made, and 3,125 weapons were seized, the report says… In all of 2024, 15 Chinese cultivation operations were the targets of enforcement actions, the DEA data show, most of them in Washington State (five) and Oregon (four). “The door opens, and I was blown away by this huge cloud of marijuana,” the director [Rod Lurie] said. “This thing blew me backwards.”
“I said, ‘Jeff, you’ve got a three page speech to give,'” Lurie said. “It’s funny watching him put on his costume. You know how a stoned person puts on clothes. And I’m going, ‘Oh my god, we’re so screwed. We’re dead. That’s my second movie. I’m never going to work again.'”
“Jeff is going, ‘Hey man!'” Lurie continued. “He says, ‘Have you had the cobbler at Emily Shaw’s Inn at Pound Ridge? Man, that food is so good.”
“I go, ‘Jeff, do you know your lines?’ He goes, ‘What lines?'” the director said. “And then we get to the room. He walks in and he sees it all. He goes, ‘Dude, there are a lot of people here.'”
While Lurie’s telling of the story made clear that the director was concerned Bridges’s cannabis use could derail the day of filming, things turned around from the moment he said “action.”

PS: For this week’s fiery blues singer, songwriter & slide guitarist, the great Ellen & her 1972 debut solo album ‘Honky Tonk Angel’. Raised in Japan by missionary (adopted) parents, she graduated from piano & singing in a church choir at the age of 5 to playing Japanese radio hits like Ray Charles & Fats Domino to returning to the US & dropping out of an ultraconservative college to finally beginning her professional performing career in Atlanta in 1966. After playing in Greenwich Village & working with some of the greats like Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters & John Lee Hooker, McIlwaine began her first band, a psychedelic blues rock group called Fear Itself. She pioneered a novel idea for the time: being both the guitarist & lead vocalist. She then went solo to record the album above as well as collaborations with musicians like Jack Bruce of Cream fame on ‘Everybody Needs It’ & the Indian tabla drummer Cassius Khan on ‘Mystic Bridge’. But differences with recording studios & troubles with alcohol were setbacks to her career. Despite achieving cult status in Australia, the discovery of her tracks by DJs in the ‘90s & finding an accepting home in Canada, by 2009 she was working as a bus driver for a private girls' school in Calgary. Just before her death by cancer in 2021, a documentary about her life got the green light. “As for her fans, Ellen McIlwaine will always be the goddess of slide.”
