Let me share a dream while the stars are aligned. Perhaps my favorite living columnist is Matt Levine, who covers business in his Bloomberg newsletter ‘Money Stuff’. He makes the world of high finance understandable to the rest of us by covering the news of the day, analyzing the history of how we got here & providing an excellent breakdown of how things really work, as well as a series of running gags & wry jokes. It’s a masterclass not only in business, but in communicating complex aspects of the world.
I have a dream of one day finding a place to write a canna-science column like that.
Right now, this newsletter takes up roughly half my week but brings in ~4% of my income. With my other contracts to pay the bills, I don't have the extra day a week it would take to write up all of this science into a narrative form, even though on weeks like these, I see a lovely set of paragraphs that would flow forth about drug delivery systems & acetylcholinesterase & adolescent brain effects & such.

PS: For a new blues album that sounds old, ‘Call Down the Thunder’ by Guy Davis. Born in New York City to parents who were actors, directors & activists, Davis grew up hearing stories of southern country life & listening to the original Delta Blues. He taught himself the guitar & in 1978, he recorded his debut album for Folkways. He also got into acting, playing in the Broadway production of ‘Mulebone’, a Zora Neale Hurston & Langston Hughes collaboration with a score by Taj Mahal, as well as later playing Robert Johnson in ‘Trick the Devil’. He started writing his own shows based on the blues as well as African-American folklore & history, including a production with his parents. He also composed music for PBS & the whole time, he kept recording & performing acoustic country blues, winning a slew of awards & collaborating with many of the greats. But he says his proudest project was the album ‘I Will Be Your Friend: Songs and Activities for Young Peacemakers’, a collection of enriching songs (including the title track by him) that serves as a teacher’s aid for teaching kids about diversity & understanding. Still alive in NYC, he sounds like a helluva guy.
