New York Knicks star center Karl-Anthony Towns is set to represent the Dominican Republic and Team World at the 2026 All-Star Game, as the NBA shifts to a new format to hope it creates a more competitive environment.
For Towns, he represented the Dominican Republic at the FIBA World Cup in 2023, appearing in three games and averaging 19.3 points and 7.7 rebounds. He might not have as much international experience as his teammates, but he's been vocal in representing his country in the past.
Talking at media day, Towns was asked about representing his country, saying that he doesn't feel much pressure in doing so and wants to be someone that kids in the DR can look up to.
"I mean, I don't think it's pressure. I've put the time in work into the gym and to my craft, and I feel very confident every time I step on the court. I know that this is bigger than me, and I'm super happy that like you said, I have the opportunity to show DR kids that it's possible...," Towns said.
It's the sixth All-Star appearance for Towns in his career, one that's been incredibly successful. He might not fit the mold as an all-time great just yet, but he's already one of the best shooting big men of all time and is undoubtedly the best player to ever come out of the Dominican Republic.
However, he made sure to give props to those who came before him and paved the way.
"I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my mentors who showed me it was possible in Charlie Villanueva, Francisco Garc铆a, Felipe L贸pez, Al Horford, of course. You know, it means a lot that I was able to take their teachings and run with them and continue to show the next generation that it's possible...," Towns said.
Out of those he listed, Horford is the best of the bunch, having five All-Star selections to his name and an All-NBA selection as well. He was a great player for the Atlanta Hawks for nearly a decade, then hit a second prime during his time with the Boston Celtics, helping them win a title in 2024.
Towns just recently turned 30, so there should still be plenty of basketball ahead for him. Whether his career finishes in New York or elsewhere, he's going down as a sports legend for his country, for a nation that's known more for its baseball talent than basketball.
