Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray reveals new personal goal after earning All-Star selection

It's been a career season for Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray, earning his first career All-Star selection and helping the Nuggets to the third seed in the Western Conference as of the All-Star break. Injuries have affected this Denver roster, but Murray has remained a consistent contributor.

Heading into the All-Star, representing Canada for Team World, Murray was very vocal about going out there and being competitive. Murray and Team World would play just two of a possible three games, with Murray's eight points and four assists not enough to beat Team Stripes in the elimination game.

Murray Setting Goals

Across the two contests, Murray had eight points, eight assists, and four rebounds, but wasn't able to help put Team World into the championship game, as they were shorthanded without Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

If healthy, it should be a different story for Team World next year in Phoenix, but Murray's attention has already pivoted to another goal.

“Well, (the) championship is my motivation. Honestly, that’s the number one thing: getting everybody healthy and just playing at a high-level," Murray said.

The Nuggets won the NBA championship in 2023, defeating the Miami Heat and earning their first title in franchise history. However, when you have a generational player in Nikola Jokic and an All-Star guard in Jamal Murray, winning a singular championship almost seems disappointing.

On top of that, Murray also has another personal goal for himself, one that he could very well reach this season.

"I want to be an All-NBA type of player now that I’ve made All-Star. So, I think that’s my next near goal for the future. So, that means that I’m playing a whole season of great basketball. So if I can do that, then we’ll consider a strong season," he added.

Ranking 13th in scoring and 6th in assists per game this season, Murray would already be in the mix for All-NBA this season without factoring in injuries. However, with several All-NBA players expected to miss out on the 65-game threshold, Murray just needs to play 15 more games this season to qualify.

Nevertheless, there's still tough competition to go against, such as Anthony Edwards, Jaylen Brown, Donovan Mitchell, Tyrese Maxey, Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, and several more. While Murray's individual stats will matter a lot for All-NBA, the record he helps lead the Nuggets to at the end of the season matters a lot as well.

If Murray can go out and make an All-NBA team this season, he'd become the first Nuggets guard to do so since the 2008-09 season, when Chauncey Billups made the All-NBA Third Team, averaging 17.7 points and 6.4 assists per game.
