The Canelo Alvarez return to the ring against Christian Mbilli has been delayed to late October, which now opens the door for the Ryan Garcia vs. Connor Benn bout for September 12
The boxing schedule for the second half of 2026 has taken another significant turn after reports that Canelo Alvarez's return to the ring has been pushed back.
According to Ring Magazine, Alvarez's scheduled September 12 showdown with WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli in Riyadh has been postponed until late October. While no official reason has been announced for the delay, the move reshuffles one of the biggest dates on the boxing calendar and could create an opportunity for another blockbuster event to fill the vacancy.
The postponement could clear the way for the long-discussed welterweight clash between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn to land on September 12, a date originally reserved for Canelo's return. Although no official announcement has been made, industry speculation has linked Garcia-Benn to the now-open slot, giving promoters an ideal pay-per-view headliner while Alvarez prepares for his comeback later in the fall.
Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) has not fought since September 2025, when he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in one of the biggest fights of the year. The defeat cost the Mexican superstar his undisputed super middleweight championship and marked the first time in years he had been beaten at 168 pounds.
Following that setback, Alvarez underwent surgery to repair an elbow injury, forcing him to miss the remainder of 2025 and the first half of 2026.
The landscape of the division also changed during his absence. After Crawford announced his retirement in December, he vacated the super middleweight titles, allowing Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) to be elevated from interim WBC champion to full titleholder in January.
That development quickly set the stage for Alvarez's comeback, with the Mexican icon targeting one of the world titles he previously held. The fight was officially announced in April and immediately became one of the most anticipated championship bouts of the year.
Instead, fans will now have to wait several more weeks to see Alvarez attempt to reclaim championship gold.
For Mbilli, the postponement simply extends his wait for the defining opportunity of his career. The unbeaten French-Cameroonian has long been viewed as one of the division's most dangerous contenders, compiling an impressive knockout ratio while patiently waiting for a chance against one of boxing's biggest names.
Meanwhile, attention could quickly shift toward Garcia and Benn. The matchup has generated considerable interest over the past several months, with both fighters looking to rebound from disappointing outings while reigniting their careers in a high-profile showdown. If finalized for September 12, the fight would preserve a marquee pay-per-view event on a traditionally lucrative boxing weekend.
Should that happen, boxing fans could ultimately benefit from the scheduling change. Rather than losing a major event, the calendar would feature Garcia versus Benn in September, followed by Alvarez's long-awaited return against Mbilli in late October.
Official confirmation on both events is still expected, but the revised schedule could produce two blockbuster fight nights instead of one, giving fans plenty to anticipate as boxing enters a busy autumn.
