Oscar Collazo's title defense turns into a flyweight test after opponent chaos, fueling speculation about a move up in weight.
Oscar Collazo's latest title defense has taken yet another unexpected twist, with the undefeated Puerto Rican champion set to compete several weight classes above his usual division after a chaotic week of opponent changes.
Collazo was originally scheduled to defend his WBA and WBO minimumweight world titles against Filipino contender Joey Canoy in the main event of a DAZN card at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California. However, visa issues prevented Canoy from traveling to the United States, forcing promoters to search for a replacement opponent on short notice.
A second option, Mexico's Luis Castillo, also encountered travel complications, leading to the late inclusion of fellow Mexican Neider Valdez. Yet even after securing a replacement, more problems emerged during fight week.
It became apparent before Friday's weigh-in that Valdez had no realistic chance of making the 105-pound minimumweight limit. As a result, the bout was transformed from a world title defense into a non-title contest at a significantly higher weight.
Collazo stepped on the scales at 110.6 pounds, while Valdez weighed 111.2 pounds, more than six pounds above the minimumweight championship limit. Consequently, Collazo's WBA and WBO world titles will not be at stake when the pair meet on Saturday night.
Instead, the fight will now be contested for the WBA International flyweight title, giving Collazo an opportunity to test himself at a heavier weight while preserving his status as a unified world champion.
The unusual circumstances may ultimately accelerate a move that Collazo was already considering.
The Puerto Rican standout, who owns a perfect (14-0, 11KOs), recently revealed that he has been evaluating his future at 105 pounds. After dominating the division and establishing himself as one of boxing's most exciting lower-weight champions, Collazo has begun exploring opportunities at higher weight classes.
One possibility is a move to light flyweight, where he could target the winner of the upcoming WBC title fight between Shokichi Iwata and Erik Badillo. Another intriguing option would see him jump directly to flyweight and pursue a showdown with fellow Golden Boy Promotions fighter Ricardo Sandoval, the unified champion at 112 pounds.
Collazo has repeatedly expressed confidence that his power will remain effective as he climbs the weight ladder. Saturday's bout could provide an early glimpse into how his skills translate against naturally larger opposition.
Valdez enters the contest with a record of 15-3-3 and 12 knockouts. While he has earned a reputation as an aggressive fighter willing to accept difficult challenges, he has suffered two knockout defeats over the last two years.
For Collazo, the evening may no longer include a world title defense, but it could serve as the first chapter of a much larger journey. With championship opportunities waiting in multiple divisions, the undefeated Puerto Rican appears closer than ever to moving beyond minimumweight and pursuing titles against a new generation of opponents.
