Lawrence Okolie’s fight with Tony Yoka in Paris, France is canceled after a failed drug test, with Okolie denying wrongdoing and vowing to clear his name.
The highly anticipated heavyweight clash between Lawrence Okolie (23-1, 17 KOs) and Tony Yoka, scheduled to headline a Queensberry Promotions card in Paris on April 25, has been abruptly canceled following a failed drug test result for Okolie.
The bout was positioned as a pivotal moment in both fighters’ careers, particularly as Okolie continues his transition into the heavyweight division. However, those plans unraveled after Queensberry Promotions confirmed that Okolie had returned an adverse finding in a test administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.
In an official statement shared via social media, Queensberry said: “Last night, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) informed Queensberry that Lawrence Okolie returned an adverse finding following an anti-doping test conducted ahead of the show in Paris this Saturday. A further update regarding the event will be made in due course.”
As a result, Okolie is expected to be removed from the fight card, leaving promoters scrambling to secure a replacement opponent for Yoka. As of now, no official substitute has been confirmed, casting uncertainty over the main event.
Shortly after the announcement, Okolie addressed the situation publicly through his Instagram account, pushing back against assumptions and offering context surrounding a recent injury. He wrote: “Before anyone starts imagining the worst, following my bicep injury last year, I sustained an elbow injury on the same arm during this camp. I had a treatment on it and now we are here. I truly hope sense prevails.”
Okolie also emphasized his willingness to cooperate with any investigation, adding: “I will of course be fully cooperating with all relevant authorities and I’m confident any investigation will clear my name. I won’t be making any further comment at this time. Thank you for all your support and see you soon.”
The development is a significant setback for Okolie, as the fight was widely viewed as a defining test in his heavyweight ambitions. For Yoka, the disruption also raises questions about his immediate future, as he now awaits confirmation on whether he will still compete and against whom.
With the main event now in flames, the undercard in Paris which was stacked looks to be up in smoke as well.
Notable bouts included Bakary Samake vs. Ermal Hadribeaj in a 12-round WBC super welterweight final eliminator, Mourad Aliev vs. Jhan Carlo Delgado in an eight-round heavyweight contest, and Enzo Marguerite vs. Jeremy Alvarez in another super welterweight clash. Additional fights feature Luis Vela vs. Yeison Juarez and Adam Olaniyan vs. Alex Kmet.
For now, the spotlight remains firmly on the unresolved situation surrounding Okolie, as the boxing world awaits further clarification and the outcome of the investigation.
