After being upset in her super middleweight title defense Friday night, Shadasia Green was seriously injured and taken by stretcher to a local NYC hospital, but she gave a positive update Sunday night.
Former unified super middleweight champion Shadasia Green disclosed Sunday that she remains hospitalized and she suffered a brain bleed during her TKO loss to Lani Daniels on Friday night in New York. The bout took place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, where Green was stopped in the ninth round and subsequently removed from the ring on a stretcher.
Following the fight, the 36 year old Green was transported to a nearby hospital, where she remained as of Sunday evening. She later provided an update through social media, explaining that she is currently in the intensive care unit but is steadily recovering.
Green posted on her Facebook page,
"I wanna thank everybody for prayers and supporters," Green wrote. "I was winning the fight until my injury got the best of me! I’m currently in the hospital in ICU With blood on my brain! A 9 millimeter to be exact. No surgery needed taking medication to decrease it and my wife and mother is at my side. Thank you for all the love and prayers. I APPRECIATE YOU ALL
Fighting out of nearby Paterson, New Jersey, Green, now 16-2, entered the Friday bout against the New Zealander Daniels, now 12-4-2, after Green had beaten England's Savannah Marshall last July, unifying two of the super middleweight titles via split decision.
The scary scene unfolded shortly after the eighth round of the scheduled 10 rounder ended. Green was clearly having problems in her corner between rounds, but it was a close competitive fight and she hadn't been seriously in trouble or, much less, knocked down. She started the ninth and was trapped immediately by Daniels who threw a series of punches, landing several and the referee immediately stopped the bout less than :30 into the round.
It is by far the biggest win of Daniels' career and one of the biggest upsets in recent women's championship boxing.
Green was seated on a stool for a couple of moments being immediately examined by the ringside doctor and then, began to lose consciousness sitting up. Paramedics quickly entered the ring and stretchered her out to a waiting ambulance.
The positive news is Green relaying in her statement that she did not have to have brain surgery, which is commonly used in these situations to relieve swelling on the brain and puts the person's life in further danger.
According to her status with the New York State Athletic Commission, Green is currently under indefinite suspension pending neurological clearance. While such injuries do not automatically end a fighter’s career, strict medical guidelines require clear imaging and evaluation before a return to competition can be considered.
