Mexican star and former world champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz is determined to leave no doubt in his bid for title relevance, when he faces reigning WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Lamont Roach. The highly anticipated matchup headlines the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) Pay-Per-View event on Saturday, December 6, streaming live on Prime Video from the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
“Winning is the only option on December 6,” Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) said earlier this week. “Whether it’s a knockout or a decision, it must be decisive. There’s no room for mistakes. My team and I are focused on one thing—victory, no matter what it takes.”
Cruz, 27, faces a dangerous challenge in D.C.'s Roach, who has quickly risen through the ranks. Earlier this year, Roach impressed boxing fans by giving three-division world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis one of the toughest fights of his career, ending in a controversial draw. Cruz, who has his own history with Davis, is aware that the winner of this bout could earn another shot at “Tank.” Still, he insists that Roach is his only focus.
“We know Roach is a great opponent and we can’t underestimate his skill,” said Cruz. “We’ve studied all his past fights and learned from his strengths and weaknesses. Every day we’re getting sharper, and that gives me the confidence that my hand will be raised on fight night.”
Hailing from Mexico City, Cruz has become a fan favorite for his relentless fighting style and fearless attitude toward elite opponents. His connection with the passionate Mexican fanbase has only grown stronger, especially since his breakout 2020 performance (also in San Antonio), where he knocked out Diego Magdaleno in the first round. Returning to that same location now as a world champion, Cruz hopes to deliver another unforgettable performance.
“There will be a lot of Mexican fans in San Antonio,” Cruz said. “Coming back to a place where I can feel their support, even away from home, is incredible. I can’t wait to feed off that energy again.”
The December 6 pay-per-view event features a stacked four-fight card filled with high-stakes matchups. Cruz says one undercard bout stands out to him in particular.
“All of the fights are great, but I’m especially looking forward to Jesus Ramos Jr. vs. Shane Mosley Jr. Ramos is a fellow Mexican warrior who represents our people with pride and dignity.”
With Canelo Álvarez nearing the twilight of his career, many see Cruz as a potential successor to carry the mantle of Mexican boxing’s next superstar. While he remains focused on one fight at a time, the opportunity to honor that legacy drives him forward.
“Being mentioned as the next face of Mexican boxing motivates me every day,” Cruz said. “It pushes me to strive for perfection—but most importantly, I want the fans to be the real winners on December 6.”
