Mikaela Mayer ventured into hostile territory in Montreal, Canada, and will return to the U.S. as a three-belt world champion after a dominant 10 round victory over Mary Spencer.
The more experienced Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) outclassed Spencer (10-3, 6 KOs) via a unanimous decision with scores of 100-90, 98-92, and 98-92 and claimed the WBA, WBC, and WBO super welterweight titles. The bout headlined the "Eye of the Tiger" Promotions card Thursday night at the Montreal Casino.
Already the reigning WBO welterweight champion, Mayer now stands as a three-division world champion.
Despite being the smaller fighter on paper, Mayer controlled the ring with a sharp jab and relentless pressure. She found her rhythm early with the straight right hand and later punished Spencer with looping hooks. Spencer, unable to handle the pressure, spent most of the bout retreating and was hurt in the closing rounds.
After the fight, Mayer reflected on her performance and her strategy:
“Usually, I’m the taller fighter, so I know how to beat me. I knew I had to get underneath Mary and come over the top with big hooks — and that’s exactly what we trained for.”
Mayer also spoke about her next steps, emphasizing her versatility and future goals:
“I’ve got options — I can defend my titles at 154 or go back to 147 and become undisputed. After the ups and downs of the past two years, having options is a blessing.”
On Thursday night's undercard:
Back to Mayer. The former U.S. Olympian's decisive win cements her status as one of boxing’s elite female fighters and with championship belts in three weight classes and certainly enhances her resume for potential hall of fame status down the road.
