A Potential O'Shaquie Foster-Shakur Stevenson title bout is getting attention after their face to face meeting in the ring, post-Foster win in Houston. However, for all the barbs tossed Saturday night, Stevenson will fight bigger opponents.
O'Shaquie Foster proved he was the better man over Raymond Ford Saturday night in Houston, TX. However, despite the attention his post-fight "face off" with multi-division world champ Shakur Stevenson who he called into the ring, that bout is totally unrealistic to happen.
Call it, "All Sizzle... No Steak."
First, Foster dominated the back half of his 12 round win over Ford to retain his WBC junior lightweight crown in the Matchroom Boxing/DAZN main event. The impressive win continues his momentum towards bigger paydays, including a possible unification bout with WBO/IBF unified 130 lb. champ Emanuel Navarrete, perhaps, later this year.
Still, the lure of fighting the former U.S. Olympian and one of the true stars of the sport in Stevenson, is great for Foster.
However, despite the insults, nose to nose on Saturday, Stevenson doesn't need Foster.
Insider Dan Rafael and I discussed this on our "Fight Freaks Unite Recap Podcast" released on Sunday night. You can hear it by pressing play below,
While, the two have been sparring partners previously, Stevenson is the much, much, bigger name and has already headlined a couple of pay per views for Turki Alashikh and the Ring Magazine.
This includes his most recent one-sided win over WBO junior welterweight champ Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden on January 31st.
The 28 year old Stevenson started strong with his jab and then, opened a cut over Lopez’s left eye in the sixth round. The champion’s corner struggled to control the bleeding for the remainder of the fight, as Shakur continued to tag Lopez with 1-2 combos and cruised to a unanimous decision victory with identical scores of 119-109 on all three cards.
At 25-0 with 11 KOs, Stevenson could fight a unification bout at junior welterweight with fellow American Gary Antuanne Russell or also wait to fight WBC champ Dalton Smith, who had to postpone his title defense scheduled for this weekend due to injury.
He also could fight prominent Mexican contender and former world champ, Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz, as well, or could also give Lopez a rematch, although there's not much outcry for that after Stevenson won 11 of the 12 rounds in fight #1.
All of those bouts are in the weight division 10 lb. up from Foster's division and although he bragged in the ring that he could fight Stevenson at that big of a weight jump, he doesn't have great punching power at 130 lb. and it would be a concern.
So, likely Stevenson waits for the bigger bouts to get offered by Alashikh on a PPV for later this year.
Again, you may have "heard the sizzle," Saturday, but that's not "steak" for Foster.
