Tim Tszyu Vows to Make Errol Spence Jr. Question His Desire Ahead of High-Stakes Australian Showdown
Tim Tszyu and Errol Spence Jr. will meet in one of the year's most intriguing crossroads fights on July 25 when they square off in a 158-pound catchweight main event at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park, New South Wales. The No Limit Boxing event, promoted in association with The Rose Brothers, Man Down Promotions, and TGB Promotions, will stream live on DAZN pay-per-view, with UK viewers also able to watch on Amazon Prime.
For both men, the bout represents far more than another payday. It is a chance to prove they still belong among boxing's elite after difficult stretches that have left their futures uncertain.
Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs), the son of Hall of Fame former undisputed junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu, appeared destined for superstardom after climbing through the rankings with a series of impressive victories. Known for his relentless pressure, heavy hands, and willingness to trade, the Australian captured the WBO junior middleweight title and looked poised to become one of the division's dominant forces.
That momentum came to a sudden halt in March 2024 when Tszyu suffered a gruesome cut early in his fight against Sebastian Fundora. Despite fighting through the blood, he lost a decision in a gutsy performance. Two more setbacks followed, including another defeat to Fundora and a punishing loss to IBF champion Bakhram Murtazaliev. Tszyu returned to winning ways in his most recent outing by defeating Denis Nurja, and shortly afterward announced that Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech would take over as his lead trainer as he looks to revive his career.
Standing across the ring will be a fighter who was once considered one of the sport's premier pound-for-pound stars.
Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) unified three of the four welterweight world titles during an outstanding championship run, defeating the likes of Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Yordenis Ugas. His career, however, has been marked by adversity outside the ring. Spence remarkably survived a horrific high-speed car crash in 2019 before returning to reclaim his place atop the division. A second automobile accident and a one-sided loss to Terence Crawford in their 2023 undisputed welterweight championship fight have left major questions surrounding his future. He has not fought since that defeat, making his lengthy inactivity one of the biggest storylines entering the Sydney showdown.
With both fighters attempting to rebuild their careers, Tszyu believes the key question is how much Spence still wants to compete.
Speaking with Fight Hub TV, the Australian questioned his opponent's motivation while making it clear he intends to test the American physically and mentally.
"He's got a certain arrogance about him. That could be because he made a st ton of money and doesn't really need to be doing this, and that type of stuff, and he really thinks down of myself. But that's all right; when we get in the ring, I really just want to hurt him; it's quite simple. That's what boxing's about." Tszyu said.
He also suggested that the fight could ultimately come down to desire rather than skill.
"Do I wanna be in there or not? That's the question. How bad do I want it? That's what I want him to question," Tszyu said when asked about Spence's mindset.
The matchup has the feel of a career-defining fight for both men. A victory would instantly restore momentum and put the winner back into the conversation for major fights at junior middleweight, while another loss could leave the defeated fighter facing difficult questions about whether his championship days are behind him. With both former world champions determined to prove they still belong on boxing's biggest stage, the July 25 showdown may ultimately be decided by who has the greater hunger to reclaim boxing's spotlight.
