In the first preseason sessions, Audi introduced a striking aerodynamic evolution on the sides of the R26, with aggressive solutions aimed at making a difference in the new cycle.

When Formula 1 opened preseason testing in Bahrain, Audi managed to draw attention beyond the lap times. The German team unveiled an R26 with visible changes in its bodywork, especially in a key area under the 2026 regulations: the sidepods.

The team decided to move away from traditional lines and commit to a bolder interpretation of the pontoons. The air intakes appear more vertical, narrower, and closer to the chassis, with the goal of shaping airflow toward the rear of the car.

In a scenario where every aerodynamic detail can turn into an advantage, Audi is looking to optimize how air flows around the radiators and is directed toward the diffuser. This is not an aesthetic choice, but an attempt to gain efficiency.

One of the most talked-about points in the paddock was the raised air intake, designed to allow cleaner airflow toward the car’s rear elements. The intention seems clear: reduce turbulence and stabilize downforce through fast corners.

These decisions reflect that 2026 will be a constant ground for exploration. Audi understands that the regulatory change opens multiple paths, and its approach aims to stand out from the start with less conservative solutions.

While other teams opted for more evolutionary configurations in the early days, the German brand leaned toward a more aggressive philosophy. The R26 serves as an example of how different teams interpret the same regulatory framework.

Engineers are working with an integrated idea: minimize drag, maximize efficiency, and find balance between aerodynamics, suspension, and energy management. The car is not defined only by the sidepods, but by how every component connects.

Audi also experimented with variations in the upper bodywork area, seeking to better channel airflow toward the rear. These are fine adjustments that could gain real value once the calendar begins.

Within the team, they acknowledge that the road to victories will not be immediate. However, the conceptual commitment is clear: build a solid foundation now in order not to arrive late to the new era.

In a Formula 1 where margins are minimal, getting ahead with bold ideas can be just as important as reliability or execution on race day. Every early interpretation matters.
