George Russell contradicted drivers such as Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen, who criticized the new 2026 Formula 1 regulations.
Checo was one of the drivers who pointed out that the new cars closely resemble those in Formula E. His former teammate at Red Bull Racing agreed. This is what the Mercedes driver said in statements published by RacingNews365: "I know there was a lot of tension after Barcelona and the first test in Bahrain, which was probably a bit premature. I think, in general, people are a little happier this week.
"Every first day of a new regulation, you face unexpected challenges, and the pace of improvement is very steep in those early days. I think this test has been much smoother for everyone.
"If you look at the lap times and some of the runs, the cars are not even a million miles away from the lap times we were seeing 12 months ago, and that was the fourth year of a regulation," he said.

While tensions are natural during sweeping regulation changes, Russell’s comments highlight a familiar pattern in Formula 1: initial discomfort often gives way to rapid adaptation. Preseason testing frequently exaggerates weaknesses that teams later solve within weeks. At the same time, criticism from experienced drivers like Pérez and Verstappen cannot be dismissed outright, as they reflect genuine concerns about driving feel and competitive balance.
The truth likely lies somewhere in between. The 2026 cars represent a technological pivot, blending heavier electrical deployment with new aerodynamic philosophies. Early lap times suggest performance may not drop dramatically, yet the subjective experience behind the wheel could still feel fundamentally different.
As development accelerates and teams unlock performance gains, the competitive narrative may shift quickly. For now, the debate itself adds intrigue to a season already defined by uncertainty — and the real answer will only emerge once the lights go out on race day.
