De la Rosa Celebrates Aston Martin’s Calculated Risk

Aston Martin has taken a step forward in recent races and Pedro de la Rosa has not hesitated to attribute much of the merit to a brave and risky strategy. The British team's ambassador has praised the decision to introduce significant upgrades to the AMR26 despite the uncertainties that entailed: "It was one of the best moments we have had" declared De la Rosa, underlining the positive impact of the upgrades on the car's performance.

The 2026 season had started in a complicated way for Aston Martin, with a car that could not find the pace of its direct rivals. However, the team decided to bet on an aggressive upgrade package that, according to De la Rosa, has changed the team's dynamic. "We made a risky but necessary decision. We knew we had to make a quality leap if we wanted to compete in the midfield and fortunately the upgrades have worked" explained the Spaniard.

The upgrades introduced on the AMR26 have allowed the team to improve its performance in qualifying and races, especially on high downforce circuits like the Hungaroring and Zandvoort. Fernando Alonso has been the main beneficiary of these upgrades, scoring points in the Netherlands with a one stop strategy that demonstrated the improvement in the car's tire management.

De la Rosa highlighted the importance of decision making in a Formula 1 team and the value of taking calculated risks: "In this sport if you don't take risks, you don't move forward, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't but the important thing is to have the courage to try. In our case the work of the whole team has paid off" he stated. The Spaniard also wanted to recognize the effort of the engineers and mechanics who have made the car's evolution possible.

Adrian Newey's role in the AMR26's development has been fundamental. The aerodynamics genius joined the team with the goal of returning Aston Martin to the fight for podiums and the upgrades introduced in recent races bear his signature. De la Rosa did not hold back on praise for the Briton: "Adrian is unique, his ability to understand the car's behavior and find solutions is something you don't see every day. Having him on the team is a privilege" he pointed out.

Despite the optimism, De la Rosa was cautious about expectations for the rest of the season. Aston Martin still has a significant top speed deficit due to the limitations of its Honda engine, which hampers its performance on circuits like Monza or Baku: "We know what our weaknesses are and on which circuits we are going to suffer but we also know that on high downforce tracks we can be competitive, the goal is to maximize our opportunities" he explained.

Aston Martin's future involves continuing to evolve the AMR26 and preparing the 2027 car, when Honda hopes to take a significant step in its power unit's power. De la Rosa trusts that the work done this season lays the foundations for a successful future: "We are building something important, the results will not come overnight but we are going in the right direction, this team has ambition and talent to return to the top" he concluded.
