Jack Doohan will remain connected to Formula 1 in 2026 despite not holding a full-time race seat. The Australian driver was confirmed as a reserve driver for another team following his departure from Alpine, a move that allows him to stay active within the paddock and continue his involvement in the category.
The confirmation came after several days of uncertainty regarding his immediate future. After leaving the Alpine structure, Doohan was left without a defined role in Formula 1, but the new agreement guarantees operational continuity within the championship.
The reserve driver role involves constant participation in the team’s day-to-day work. Doohan will be involved in simulator duties, data analysis, and technical preparation, while also remaining on standby to replace either of the full-time drivers if required during the season.
Those close to the driver emphasized that this type of role is key to maintaining professional projection. Remaining within a Formula 1 team allows continued direct contact with car development and the technical processes that define on-track performance.
Leaving Alpine marked a turning point in his career. After being part of the young driver program and fulfilling various roles within the team, the Australian had to reconfigure his path in an increasingly closed driver market.
In that sense, Doohan had previously stated that “staying in Formula 1, even in a different role, is essential for any driver who aspires to race again.” That perspective explains the importance of securing a reserve position for 2026.
The team that signed him highlighted his preparation and prior experience within top-level structures. From the team’s side, they explained that having a driver familiar with the category’s internal workings adds significant value.
The current Formula 1 landscape also shapes this type of move. With most race seats secured long term, reserve driver positions have become an increasingly relevant pathway.
Beyond the technical side, the role also demands constant physical and mental preparation. Doohan must be ready to step into the car at any moment.
In this way, Doohan begins a new chapter within the championship. Without a permanent spot on the grid, but with an active and confirmed role, the Australian remains in Formula 1 and keeps his future options within the current paddock open.
