Lewis Hamilton was the main protagonist on Friday during Formula 1 testing in Barcelona. On the final day of the week, the British driver led Ferrari’s work and managed to top the day’s times, in a session focused on data collection and configuration validation.
Ferrari’s plan for Friday was clearly defined. The Italian team opted for a continuous program, with clean runs and no interruptions, aiming to log mileage and evaluate the car’s overall behavior in different conditions. In that context, Hamilton was able to carry out his work smoothly and finish the day as the benchmark of the session.
The most notable detail was that the Brit finished ahead of the Mercedes cars, which had set the pace for much of the previous days. That reference came without any extreme shift in Ferrari’s approach, as the team prioritized consistency and technical analysis over chasing a specific lap time.
Beyond the final order, Friday once again confirmed that preseason times need to be treated with caution. Teams were running different fuel loads and specific programs, so positions don’t necessarily reflect true potential. Even so, for Ferrari it was relevant to close the week with Hamilton on top and without setbacks.
From an operational standpoint, Ferrari focused much of its work on longer runs and on the car’s response over the course of a stint. Hamilton was able to complete the planned program without mechanical issues, something the team considers key at this stage of preparation before moving on to more targeted testing.
Mercedes also wrapped up Friday with a stable working day, although this time it finished behind on the times. The German team continued with its evaluation plan for the W17, alternating race simulations and aerodynamic tests, without altering its overall roadmap.
The format of the Barcelona tests, with private sessions and limited access to real-time data, shaped the external reading of Friday. In that scenario, continuity of work and the number of laps completed carry more weight than the final lap times.
With the week coming to a close, Ferrari leaves Barcelona with a solid base of information and Hamilton as the clear reference on the final day. The Brit delivered a consistent Friday and left the Italian team well positioned heading into the next phase of preparation.
