The McLaren driver lost control of the car on the formation lap toward the grid and crashed into the wall. The Australian exited the car on his own and was unable to take the start.

The 2026 Australian Grand Prix began with an unexpected scene even before the lights went out. Oscar Piastri, one of the weekend’s main protagonists and the local driver, was out of the race after crashing his McLaren during the reconnaissance lap before the start at the Albert Park circuit.

The incident occurred while the field was heading toward the grid to take their final starting positions. While accelerating out of a corner, Piastri’s single-seater lost grip and the driver was unable to regain control of the car. The McLaren ended up hitting the wall head-on, causing enough damage to prevent any attempt to continue.

The scene surprised the entire paddock, as the Australian arrived on Sunday with high expectations after a strong performance throughout the weekend. In addition, the driver was starting from a competitive position on the grid, which had fueled the hopes of local fans of seeing him fight for a strong result.

After the impact, Piastri got out of the car without immediate medical assistance and it was quickly confirmed that the driver was in good physical condition. However, the single-seater was too damaged to return to the garage and prepare for the start, making retirement inevitable even before the race began.

Early evaluations suggest the incident was related to a lack of temperature in the tires or a sudden throttle response when exiting the corner. In cold track conditions and with the tires still warming up, loss of traction can occur suddenly, especially in cars with high power delivery.

The crash was especially painful for the local driver, who was facing his home race in front of thousands of Australian fans who hoped to see him compete for the top positions. The expectations surrounding Piastri had grown throughout the weekend, which made the early retirement a major disappointment in the stands.

For McLaren, the incident represents a difficult start to the 2026 championship. The team had shown positive signs in several previous sessions, but the retirement of one of its drivers even before the start eliminates any chance of scoring points with that car.

The Australian Grand Prix will continue without one of its main protagonists. As the race unfolds in Melbourne, Piastri’s crash is already marked as one of the most unexpected moments of the start of the season.
