Following the opening free practice of the season Free Practice 2 brought its own chaos and learning opportunities.
The pit lane brought its own issues when the green flashed at the end of it. Immediately off the start, drivers rushed to get out on track to maximize the allotted time and get fresh track conditions. Some drivers might’ve rushed too quickly to get out.
Arvid Lindblad and George Russell got into a slight mess that could’ve caused much more damage if not caught by a member of Russell’s pit crew.
As George Russell was released and creeping into the line-up cars waiting to get on track, Arvid Lindblad pulled forward and clipped Russell’s front wing. Russell called in on the radio that “this guy's just hit my front wing,” and looked quite frustrated when the incident occurred.
Russell’s pit crew quickly ran back out to retrieve the Mercedes and rolled it back into the garage to do repairs before letting the number 63 car out on track to run laps.
There was also a moment in the pit lane releases between Franco Colapinto and Lewis Hamilton when Colapinto was slowly creeping up and Hamilton quickly came up to the rear of the Alpine.
Max Verstappen had a rough attempt at a start to the session when his RedBull challenger lost power before being able even to exit the pit lane entirely. The stewards in the pit had to help the Red Bull back to the garage before mechanics could get it back, eventually allowing Verstappen to go out and put in laps.
As seen in both Free Practice One and Free Practice Two, drivers all across the grid are experiencing lock-ups going into the corners with these new cars. Call it rust from the off-season or warming up to the new regulation cars, there has been a fair share of off-line recoveries.
Drivers from all different packs within the grid are locking up from Isack Hadjar’s brief gravel entry in turn 13 to Franco Colapinto, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton all ending up in a similar position after slightly larger lock ups.
Max Verstappen experienced damage from his lock up sending his car into the gravel at turn 10 with parts seen coming off the car and falling into the gravel. The parts were a part of his aerodynamics system and were able to be repaired.
A yellow flag was waved when Sergio Perez stopped on the side of turn 12 with an eventual Virtual Safety Car when Perez got out of the car. Perez was told that there was an issue with the car and to retire.
Luckily for Sergio Perez the session was almost over so he was not missing out on much track time after getting out of the car. The issue was suspected to be with the hydraulics, but the crew got to take a look at it when it returned to the garage and diagnose it amongst themselves.
The hometown hero went fastest overall in Free Practice Two with a lap time of 1:19.729 after just 25 laps. Oscar Piastri was the only McLaren in the top 5, followed by both Mercedes on his heels.
Kimi Antonelli put in the second fastest time overall of 1:19.943 and his teammate George Russell went third fastest overall barely missing Antonelli by +0.190 seconds.
The Mercedes duo was followed by the Ferrari duo, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, and Max Verstappen in the RedBull.
