The home race curse has been taking victim after victim this season, but some have thrived.
Victims of the curse
Oscar Piastri kicked off the curse at the opening race of the season. The Australian driver didn’t even start the race after a crash on the formation lap on the exit of Turn 4, resulting in a lot of damage to the car. Piastri attributed the crash to a combination of things, including cold tires, clipping the kerb, and an unexpected surge of power that was more than he anticipated.
Charles Leclerc was not only a victim of the 2026 home race curse, but also resurrected his Monaco Grand Prix curse following his win there in 2024. Leclerc had a decent qualifying and beginning of the race. He qualified 4th and spent most of the race in 3rd despite having brake failures throughout the weekend. Things went worse for the Monegasque on the safety car restart on lap 66 when he went straight through the final corner and straight into the barriers, causing severe damage to the car and the end of his race.
Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz both had poor finishes at the Barcelona Grand Prix, one of their two home races this season. Alonso started the race from the pit lane due to changes made to the car and eventually retired from the race on lap 40 due to a battery failure. Sainz’s weekend was honestly a pretty typical weekend for the Williams driver. He started the race 16th after being knocked out in Q2 and made his way up to 12th in the race, just barely finishing outside the points.
Lance Stroll started the Canadian Grand Prix race from the pit lane after Aston Martin changed his battery and setup following a poor qualifying session. The AMR26 had a lot of performance issues, and that combined with multiple pit stops led to Stroll being lapped 4 times by the leaders of the race.
Max Verstappen crashed on the first lap of his last home race at Zandvoort. There were wet patches all over the circuit from earlier rain showers, and Verstappen admits that he accelerated too early on the slick track. He hit the barriers twice and a red flag was brought out immediately, but luckily he walked away unharmed.
Those who have defied odds
George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris all had great results, finishing in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively at Silverstone. While a British diver didn’t win, all three got good points on the board, especially since Championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished outside the points. Rookie Arvid Lindblad also had a great finish at his first home race, finishing 7th, one of his best finishes this season.
While the Brits performed well, Kimi Antonelli is the ultimate breaker of the home race curse. Fans didn’t have home going into the Italian Grand Prix weekend as Antonelli had a back of the grid penalty. The Italian started the race 19th and managed to work his way all the way up to first amidst battles with his teammate. Antonelli went on to win his home race for the first and from one of the furthest back positions to cement himself as the first Italian winner at Monza in 60 years!
Alonso and Sainz have a second chance this weekend at the Madring to hopefully have better results than they had at Barcelona. Gabriel Bortoleto and Checo Perez both have home races coming up soon during the Americas stint of the calendar, so time will tell whether we see more successes at home or more victims to add to the list.
