Irish driver Alex Dunne joins Alpine’s junior program while continuing his Formula 2 campaign, in a move that reinforces the team’s strategy of developing talent with a pathway to Formula 1.
Alpine continues strengthening its driver development program with the addition of Irish driver Alex Dunne, one of the emerging prospects in European motorsport. The driver, currently competing in Formula 2, will become part of the Alpine Academy, a program designed to prepare young talents with the goal of eventually integrating them into Formula 1.
Dunne joins the academy at a key moment in his career. After completing his debut season in Formula 2, the driver established himself as one of the most competitive names in the category, attracting the attention of several teams across the grid. In that context, Alpine decided to bring him into its development program to strengthen the pool of drivers who work with the team in simulator sessions, technical testing, and preparation activities.
The Irish driver explained that his decision to join the project was based on the long-term vision presented to him by the Enstone-based organization. “For me it’s a very important step. I’m very happy to be part of Alpine,” he said when referring to the opportunity to join the team’s young driver program. According to Dunne, the project offers him a technical environment where he can continue to grow while competing in junior categories.
The Alpine Academy operates as a platform designed to support the progression of young drivers toward Formula 1. The program, originally created by Renault in 2002, focuses on providing technical support, physical preparation, and access to advanced simulation tools that allow drivers to familiarize themselves with the complexity of modern single-seaters.
Within that system, Dunne will integrate into a group of drivers who collaborate with the team across different areas of development. The work goes beyond racing in junior categories; it also includes simulator sessions and participation in technical activities aimed at understanding the behavior of Formula 1 cars.
The Irish driver’s career path partly explains Alpine’s interest. Dunne was the British F4 champion in 2022 and later progressed to international championships such as Formula 3 and Formula 2, collecting wins and podiums that positioned him as one of the most promising talents of his generation.
In addition, his previous experience within McLaren’s development program allowed him to become familiar with the technical structure of a Formula 1 team, even participating in free practice sessions during a Grand Prix weekend. That experience is seen as a valuable element in accelerating his adaptation to the Alpine environment.
The driver also emphasized that his immediate priority remains competing at the highest level in Formula 2. For Dunne, the objective is to consolidate results on track while working in parallel with the team on development tasks and technical learning. According to him, the balance between competition and preparation is essential to progressing toward Formula 1.
From Alpine’s perspective, Dunne’s addition is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring a steady pipeline of talent toward the main team. In a category where technical and sporting evolution requires long-term planning, the development of young drivers becomes a central element of the project.
With the Formula 2 championship underway and the Formula 1 season progressing, Dunne’s development within the program will be closely monitored.
