The 44 year old Asturian driver assured that his continuity in F1 will depend on the British team's progress. He also acknowledged that his performance remains "good enough" and that he wants to leave feeling 100%.
Fernando Alonso does not want to rush, the 44 year old Asturian driver has a contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2026, but his future beyond this season is unknown. At the Miami Grand Prix, where for the first time both green cars crossed the finish line, Alonso was asked about his continuity, his response was clear, there will be no decision until after the summer.
"I'm very calm about it, if I keep competing, I think it will be a better season than this one with the project in its second year, if I stop competing, I know I'll compete in other series. I'm open to everything, probably until after the summer break I won't sit down with the team to make a decision," he declared.
The context is complex, Aston Martin has been a disaster with the AMR26, in the first races, the car was not even able to complete all the laps. The Honda engine has been far behind expectations, and Adrian Newey's design, so far, has also not performed, the vibrations that compromised the drivers' physical condition have been the norm in a forgettable start to the season.
Alonso, who returned to F1 in 2021 after a two year break in which he competed and won in other categories, has seen many projects come and go, he arrived at Aston Martin in 2023 with the hope of fighting for wins (he achieved eight podiums, coming close to victory in Monaco), but the team fell apart in 2024 and 2025, even falling out of the points at some stages.
"We also need to see how the car improves and how we see things for next year, you can't be 100% sure," Alonso explained, and his continuity, he admits, will depend in large part on the progress they see in the power unit and the car.
But Alonso does not doubt himself: "I think my performance is good enough to show the team that I can deliver results if the car is competitive, I'm helping the team as much as I can," stated the driver who has turned 44, assures that he feels 100% and that he does not want to extend his career beyond what is reasonable.
"I think it could depend more on me, I know I'm at 100% now and I want to leave when I feel like that," he concluded.
The decision, therefore, is not only technical, it is also personal. Alonso wants to retire feeling competitive, and for this, the summer will be key. If Aston Martin improves, he could continue, if not, the two time champion will look for new horizons.
