The American team signs the 19 year old New Yorker as a test driver for 2027, fulfilling its objective of having local talent.
Cadillac is already working on the future, the American team that is going through a complicated debut season in Formula 1, has set its sights on a talent that fits perfectly with its vision of the future: Ugo Ugochukwu. The 19-year-old New York driver recently crowned Formula 3 champion, will become the team's test driver for the 2027 season according to information from motorsport specialized media, a bet that confirms Cadillac's intention to have American talent in its ranks.
Ugochukwu is not a stranger in the world of top-speed racing: born in New York but developed in Europe, the young driver took his first steps in McLaren's young driver program although he was later released, far from giving up Ugochukwu kept working and this year he has made history by becoming the first American to win Formula 3. His next step will be Formula 2, where he will continue his training, while combining those duties with some practice in the top category.
Ugochukwu's arrival at Cadillac responds to a clear strategy of the team: to have an American driver on the grid. Until now the team had placed its hopes in Colton Herta, a test driver who has had to adapt to single-seaters very different from those he is used to in the United States, however Ugochukwu's profile is different: his European training and his experience in the promotion categories make him a more natural candidate to make the jump to Formula 1.
Cadillac has a contract with Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas for 2027, which means that the starting lineup will not change in the short term however, Ugochukwu's arrival as a test driver opens the door to changes in the future. The American team wants to build a solid and competitive project in the long term and having a young and talented driver like Ugochukwu is a key piece in that strategy.
The Mexican Sergio Pérez, who arrived at Cadillac in 2025 with the mission of leading the project, remains a fundamental piece for the team. His experience and his ability to work have been decisive for a team that is still in the construction phase, however, Pérez will turn 37 in 2027 and his medium-term future is an unknown. Ugochukwu's arrival and Herta's possible promotion could precipitate a generational change in Cadillac's lineup in the coming years.
Cadillac's bet on Ugochukwu is not only a matter of talent, but also of identity since the team wants to consolidate itself as an American structure with global projection and having a driver trained in Europe but born in New York fits perfectly in that plan.
For now the team focuses on closing the 2026 season in the best possible way and on preparing the 2027 car, Ugochukwu's arrival is a sign that Cadillac is serious about its bet on young talent and on having an American presence on the grid, time will tell if the F3 champion becomes the driver the team needs to make the leap in quality it so longs for.
