Cadillac F1 shareholder and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter has been named in a class action suit.
A major class-action lawsuit was filed against billionaire Mark Walter, the CEO and co-chairman of TWG Global, which is the parent holding company and majority owner of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team.
Walter is also the owner of Major League Baseball (MLB) team Los Angeles Dodgers. He's also the controlling owner of investment group Sparks LA Sports, which owns the WNBA team Los Angeles Sparks.
The proposed class action was brought by law firm Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, on behalf of 67-year-old Florida resident Ira Rosner. The suit names Walter personally, alongside Delaware Life Insurance Company, Group 1001, Guggenheim Partners, and TWG Global, as defendants.
The complaint cites counts of fraudulent concealment, negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, and civil conspiracy.
The class action is still at an early stage, so there's no trial date yet.
Have the defendants issued a statement?
Yes, Group 1001 immediately issued a statement, saying that they will "defend the case vigorously", referencing their "long track record of serving policyholders with integrity."
Back in late August, TWG already said that they were working with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) to resolve any allegations of fraud within their companies.
Moreover, TWG reiterated that they're not planning to sell the Cadillac team or "any other part of TWG Motorsport."
Does this lawsuit directly affect Cadillac F1?
Despite the heavy headline exposure, Cadillac F1 won't be immediately affected by this lawsuit. It's important to note that Cadillac F1, TWG Motorsport, and General Motors are not named as defendants in the lawsuit. This means that the F1 team and its management are not accused of any wrongdoing.
And as mentioned earlier, TWG Global doesn't have plans to sell any team within its Motorsport division.
However, Cadillac might face potential financial bottlenecks and reputational damage in the future. The free flow of capital that previously funded Walter's aggressive sports expansion, just like in F1, could face tighter oversight.
Then, there are the challenges they might face in securing sponsorships. High-profile legal proceedings around a primary owner can complicate negotiations with brand sponsors.
It's already a difficult year for Cadillac F1, as they're still without points in their debut season. Even the team's new director, Marcin Budkowski, was surprised at how challenging it was to lead the garage.
But the drivers still believe that Cadillac can fight for wins in the future. Mexican driver Sergio Perez said that Cadillac will eventually be the "best team in Formula 1."
Still, they would be hoping that Walter can clear himself of any wrongdoing, so that the team can focus on building momentum.
