Urgent brake fixes and performance upgrades arrive for Hungary, but Cadillac may soon halt 2026 development to prioritize future resources after a double retirement at Spa-Francorchamps.
Cadillac has reportedly made a significant decision regarding its drivers, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, following their results at the Belgian Grand Prix of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. At the Spa-Francorchamps race, the American team saw its Mexican driver forced to retire, only to see also his teammate receive the same outcome.
Therefore, the team has reportedly taken immediate action on the matter ahead of the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix. According to information from the Italian branch of Motorsport.com, Cadillac has found solutions to prevent overheating of the brake systems on Bottas' and Perez's cars, which would prevent them from experiencing another mid-race retirement.
Reportedly, Valtteri Bottas himself confirmed that the team has found improvements in the quality of the components used on the car, which would prevent future breakdowns or imperfections during race weekends. Therefore, this is expected to give team management the confidence to incorporate performance upgrades directly into the cars.
Sergio Pérez's teammate confirmed that upgrades are expected for the race in Budapest, which could directly impact the cars' performance after several weeks in which they seemed to be on an upward trend in their results. For Cadillac, a realistic objective for the remaining races in the 2026 calendar would be getting their first points, something that Sergio Pérez already did, but it was taken away by the FIA because of a punishment.
Why are Cadillac's upgrades in Hungary bad news?
However, the news of a Cadillac upgrade package for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring could also have a negative impact on the rest of the season. According to information revealed by the same source, these upgrades could be among the last that the American team incorporates into its cars.
It was Valtteri Bottas himself who raised the question of when Cadillac will decide to pause development of its 2026 car and focus its efforts and financial resources on the 2027 model. This is a decision that other teams, such as Williams and Alpine, have made in recent years, abandoning all development of one car to free up more resources for the following season.
For a newly formed team like Cadillac, this would be a logical decision, considering their limited financial resources compared to teams like Ferrari, Red Bull Racing, or Mercedes. Any cost-saving measure would be welcome. Given that neither Pérez nor Bottas signed with Cadillac aiming for immediate podium finishes or victories, this is a predictable move for a team whose participation in Formula 1 was confirmed just a few months ago.
