The Mexican driver anticipates the arrival of key personnel from other teams in the coming months. He highlights the positive impact of Marcin Budkowski as team principal and trusts that the team will be able to get closer to the midfield.
Cadillac is in the middle of a construction process and Sergio Pérez is a privileged witness to the American team's evolution. The Mexican driver has revealed that the team is awakening a growing interest among top level personnel in the paddock, which could translate into key signings in the coming months: "I don't want to share it with you but obviously very good people are coming. I think the interest of important names in the paddock to come and work for Cadillac is increasing, which is great" declared Pérez in the media day of the Italian Grand Prix.
The Mexican's optimism contrasts with the on track results, which have been modest in the team's debut season, however Pérez trusts that the arrival of new talent will accelerate the growth process. The attraction of experienced personnel from other teams is an indicator that the Cadillac project is being perceived as serious and with a long term future, a key factor for competing in the demanding modern Formula 1.
The team's internal restructuring has had a turning point with the arrival of Marcin Budkowski as the new team principal. The Pole, who took over after Graeme Lowdon's departure, has already begun to leave his mark. Pérez highlighted the leadership of the new team principal, especially after his first weekend of joint work in Zandvoort, where Budkowski chose to observe and understand the internal functioning before implementing changes.
"I've seen a lot of leadership, first of all, from him, I think he arrives with an approach where he wants to see all the positions in the team, he has very clear what he should focus on in the next three months" explained the driver. Pérez stressed that Budkowski's presence has already had a "very positive impact," suggesting that the team's structure is responding well to his direction.
Cadillac's short term goal is clear, to get closer to the midfield. Pérez is aware of the distance that separates them from their direct rivals but also that the margin for improvement is significant: "When you look at our pace we are not three seconds away from being in the points, if we find a second in the coming months, suddenly we can start fighting in the middle of the table" stated the Mexican.
Pérez's analysis is realistic but optimistic: "I remain very optimistic, I can see, especially now with Marcin and his leadership that good people are coming in the coming months" he insisted. The driver acknowledged that the debut season was predictably difficult but trusts that the combination of new leadership and the arrival of key personnel will allow the team to make a quality leap.
Building a Formula 1 team from scratch is a slow and complex process, but Cadillac seems to be following the right steps, the ability to attract talent from other teams, the solidity of Budkowski's leadership and the confidence of drivers like Pérez are positive signs.
The American team's future will depend on its ability to optimize its on track processes, improve strategy and increase the car's reliability. If they manage to advance in these areas, the dream of fighting for points could be closer than it seems.
