Formula 1 introduced a new generation of V6 turbo hybrid engines in 2026 that redefine the balance between combustion and electricity.
The 2026 Formula 1 season has brought the deepest mechanical revolution of the last decade. The new engine, officially called the "power unit," maintains the 1.6 liter V6 turbo base, but its internal architecture has completely changed, creating a system that fans need to understand to grasp today's races.
The biggest change is the new power distribution. While in the previous era (2014-2025) the split between the combustion engine and the electrical part was approximately 80/20, it has now moved to an almost equal split. The maximum power of the internal combustion engine (ICE) has been reduced, and in comparison, the power of the MGU-K (the electric motor) has jumped to 350 kW (about 470 HP), almost three times as much as before. The result is a much more balanced hybrid system, where electricity carries as much weight as gasoline.

This complex system recovered energy from exhaust heat but was expensive and had no application in road cars. Its removal simplifies the engine and reduces costs, which has attracted new manufacturers like Audi, Ford and Honda. Energy recovery is now concentrated in the MGU K, which can recover up to 8.5 M J per lap during braking, more than double the previous amount.
This greater dependence on electricity has changed the way drivers race. The concept of lift and coast (lifting off before a corner to recharge the battery) has become a constant necessity. If a driver runs out of electrical energy in the middle of a lap, the performance loss is abrupt, which has generated many criticisms among drivers.
To help with overtaking, the DRS system has been replaced by a new "Overtake Mode." This means that a driver who is less than a second behind the car in front can activate it to get an extra 0.5 M J of electrical energy and a maximum power of 350 k W. Does it sound familiar? This mode replaces the movable wing, but its use is limited and is no longer as straightforward as before.
Another tenet of the new regulations is the use of 100% sustainable fuel. All cars now use advanced fuels produced from non-fossil sources, which drastically reduce emissions.
Finally, to prevent a manufacturer from dominating without opposition, the FIA has created the ADUO system (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities). This mechanism allows engine manufacturers that are behind in performance (2% or more) to introduce upgrades to their power units during the season with additional relief on the budget cap. Manufacturers with a deficit of up to 4% can make one upgrade, and those above that, up to two.
The first stages of the season have shown the complexity of this new system. Battery management has become as strategic as aerodynamics, and teams are learning to optimize an engine that is, equally, a combustion machine and a high performance electric generator.
