The Lusail International Circuit is ramping up preparations for the Formula 1 and MotoGP race weekends.
As of today, it looks like the Middle East races are pushing through, both for Formula 1 and MotoGP.
Lusail International Circuit CEO Abdulaziz Ali Al-Muhannadi reiterated that they are ramping up preparations for hosting "two of the most anticipated events on the international motorsport calendar." Muhannadi also mentioned that they have almost completed these preparations, which means that there is a real chance that the Qatar Grand Prix will push through.
Their hosting of the MotoGP race takes a heightened sense of urgency. The event is scheduled for November 6 to 8, which is just a couple of weeks away. Take note that MotoGP also has a staple Sprint Race for every scheduled Grand Prix.
After the MotoGP race, Lusail will then set its sights on the F1 Qatar Grand Prix, which will take place from November 27 to 29.
The Lusail International Circuit opened primarily in 2004 for MotoGP. In 2008, it hosted the first-ever night race in MotoGP history. It was in 2021 when the circuit hosted its first Formula 1 race, with then Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton converting pole position to a win of more than 25 seconds over Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
There's still no confirmed announcement from F1
Despite Lusail's preparations, there's still no confirmed decision from the side of the FIA and Formula 1. The indecision stems from the security and stability concerns in the Middle East region, although Qatari authorities have reiterated the country's safety and readiness.
F1 has already cancelled a couple of Middle East races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia earlier this season. The Bahrain GP still pushed through, but it was held at another venue, particularly at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The event was named the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, and it was a very successful race that saw Verstappen take his first victory of the season.
F1 does have a contingency plan if the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix don't push through. They gave the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola the green light to prepare their track, making it a backup venue for a potential season finale in December. After hosting the 2025 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Imola was originally crossed off the calendar this season.
The high-speed corners of Lusail
Formula 1 drivers love racing in the high-speed corners of Lusail, especially under the floodlights. However, the track doesn't have tons of overtaking opportunities, as it's difficult to closely follow a car in front. The combination of high-speed corners and dirty air leads to severe tyre degradation.
But the qualifying session in Lusail is something else. It's a real test of commitment and technical driving for the grid. We're hoping that there won't be very pressing safety concerns around the region, so that the F1 grid can return here.
