The Austrian GP will coincide with a heat wave that could bring temperatures up to 35°C. The Austrian weather service has issued an orange alert for the Spielberg region. If temperatures exceed 30.5°C, the FIA will activate the extreme heat protocol.

The Austrian Grand Prix is shaping up to be the hottest race of the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg could reach temperatures of up to 35°C during the competition weekend due to a heat wave affecting central Europe.

The Austrian weather service, GeoSphere, has issued an orange alert for high temperatures in the region, indicating a high risk to public safety and will force the FIA to activate its protection protocols for drivers and teams.

The forecast for the coming days calls for clear skies, with few clouds and very light winds, which will further increase the heat in the region. Although extreme temperatures are not common at the Red Bull Ring, the combination of the heat wave and direct sun exposure during practice, qualifying, and race sessions could test drivers' endurance and the reliability of the new 2026 cars.

If temperatures remain above 30.5°C over the weekend, F1 will issue an extreme heat alert, as happened last year in Singapore and the United States. So far, no race of the 2026 season has been governed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) protocol to protect drivers and teams from extreme heat so that Austria will be the first test for this system.

In case the protocol is activated, drivers will be required to wear cooling vests to mitigate the high temperatures, a measure that last year was optional and has now become mandatory. The goal is to prevent extreme heat from affecting driver performance and reduce the risk of heatstroke or dehydration during competition sessions.

In addition, this will be the first time that the new 2026 F1 engines face temperatures as high as those forecast for Austria. Teams will have to manage the cooling of the power units and tire degradation, two factors that could condition the outcome of the race. High temperatures will also affect tire grip and pit stop strategy, adding an element of uncertainty to a weekend that already promises to be complicated for the teams.

Formula 1 returns from June 26 to 28 with the Austrian Grand Prix, the eighth race of the 2026 season, at the Red Bull Ring.

With temperatures expected to soar and the new 2026 cars facing their first true test in extreme heat, Austria could be the weekend where the championship pecking order shifts once again, as teams that manage cooling and tire degradation better than their rivals will gain a crucial advantage heading into the summer races.
