Red Bull's Max Verstappen survived the chaos of the wet Sprint Race in Marina Bay.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen started from pole and emerged victorious in the Sprint Race of the 2026 Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix.
Verstappen, who fumbled his start a bit, got overtaken by Mercedes driver George Russell into Turn 1. With the wet conditions at the track, the Red Bull driver found it difficult to get back at Russell, especially here in the narrow streets of Marina Bay.
However, Russell made a crucial mistake in Lap 2, running off the kerbs in Turn 19 and crashing his rear wing in the barriers. The British driver didn't manage to get his car to start again, retiring early after his excellent start.
More drivers retired after Russell's crash
Russell wasn't the only casualty of the wet conditions in Singapore. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and Cadillac's Sergio Perez found themselves in a wheel-to-wheel battle and collided with each other. Stroll and Perez retired right after.
Red Bull's Isack Hadjar and Alpine's Franco Colapinto also encountered issues in their car under Safety Car conditions, forcing them to retire early.
When the Safety Car ended in Lap 7, five drivers were already out of the race. But there were more retirements to come.
In Lap 9, Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas collided with each other and retired. There were 15 drivers left in the race by then.
Then, during the final lap, the two McLaren drivers tumbled down the order. They were scrapping against each other almost the entire race. Their battle culminated when Lando Norris attempted a move on the inside of Oscar Piastri. The latter tried to brake late, but he hit Norris, forcing both cars to turn the wrong way.
Piastri couldn't finish the race, while Norris managed to salvage a single point with his P8 finish.
Hamilton storms through from P6
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton started in sixth place, but got off nicely into Turn 1 and found himself in third place. The Russell crash bumped him up to second place, although he couldn't get close to Verstappen in front.
Still, it was a good haul of points for Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc finishing in third place.
Can Verstappen replicate his success for the main race?
Verstappen took his first Sprint win of the year, but he will be more focused in winning the main race. After all, the Dutchman hasn't won in Singapore yet. Plus, he hasn't started in pole for the Grand Prix here at Marina Bay.
He will have a good chance on Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race, especially with how fast the Red Bull's pace here.
