The Asturian conditions his continuity on the 2027 regulations and does not rule out a program with Aston Martin in the WEC. He criticized the lack of excitement of the current cars and assures that his decision will not be made in the short term.
Fernando Alonso has once again put the uncertainty about his future in Formula 1 on the table. The Asturian driver, who has already accumulated several retirements in the 2026 season, admitted in the press conference ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix that his continuity will depend on the new technical regulations that will come into force in 2027: "It's about understanding next year's regulations and the impact they will have on the races and on the driver, these cars are not the best to drive or to enjoy" declared Alonso in Madrid.
The two time world champion has been critical in recent months of the hybrid power units and the complexity of the current cars: "Next year will be a step in the right direction, or so I hope. I need to think about what the best program for 2027 is, I will meet with the team and I don't know if it will be at the wheel or in another role but I will help in any way I can" he explained. Alonso made it clear that his decision will not be immediate, commenting that he will think about it and decide in the future.
The Asturian also revealed what has been, so far, the best day of his year. Far from racing, Alonso enjoyed a test day with classic cars in Barcelona: "It has been the best day of the year so far. I drove cars without batteries, just with gasoline, tires, a lot of noise, hearing protection… incredible" he confessed enthusiastically. Among the cars he had the opportunity to drive was Ayrton Senna's 1984 Toleman, an experience he described as unique. "I hope next year's rules change again, that it is not the definitive version" he added.
The big surprise of Alonso's appearance came when he was asked about the possibility of competing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Aston Martin, that's where the Asturian was direct: "Yes." The answer opened the door to a future outside Formula 1, but linked to the British brand. Alonso already has experience in the WEC, where he competed with Toyota in the 2018/2019 season and achieved victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 6 Hours of Spa and the 1000 Miles of Sebring. In IMSA, he also won the 24 Hours of Daytona.
Aston Martin currently competes in both WEC classes but the most attractive project is the Hypercar with the Valkyrie, which does not have a hybrid power unit, this characteristic could be an incentive for Alonso, who has repeatedly expressed his preference for more analog cars that are less dependent on hybrid technology.
Alonso's future in Formula 1 remains an unknown. The Asturian, who will turn 46 in 2027, has made it clear that his motivation is not simply to keep competing, but to do so in conditions that allow him to enjoy and be competitive.
The 2027 regulations will be decisive for his decision, meanwhile Aston Martin and the WEC appear as real alternatives for a driver who continues to demonstrate that his talent and his passion for motorsport are intact. The ball is in the FIA's court and in the hands of those responsible for Formula 1, who will have to convince one of the sport's legends to prolong his career in the top category.
