American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu is climbing the ladder to the most coveted step in motorsport.
Ugo Ugochukwu, who drives for Campos Racing, recently won the FIA Formula 3 Championship. He became the first American to win the F3 championship, as his second-place finish in the recently concluded Spanish Grand Prix was enough to give him the points he needed.
His success did not go unnoticed in the top ranks, with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton congratulating him on his title. The seven-time F1 World Champion was seen talking to Ugochukwu during the Spanish GP, after the latter secured the F3 championship.
Ugochukwu is only 19 years of age and is still on track for a path to a Formula One seat, the most coveted step in motorsport. How did the American racing driver get here? Let's trace back the work he has done so far.
When did Ugochukwu start racing?
Ugochukwu was born on April 23, 2007, in New York City, to Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and Italian fashion designer Luca Orlandi.
He was drawn to karting at a very young age and began competing seriously in 2014. During that year, Ugochukwu won the Micro ROK Cup USA and then emerged victorious in the 2015 Florida Winter Tour.
To get to the next level, his family made the move to Europe to race against the best junior talent there. It eventually paid off, as Ugochukwu won the X30 Mini category in the 2017 IAME International Open.
Then, at age 13, Ugochukwu took a major career leap by racing for the Sauber Karting Team and winning the 2020 FIA OK- Junior European Karting Championship. This caught the attention of the higher ranks in the motorsport industry.
Ugochukwu joins McLaren
Ugochukwu's hard work paid off big time in 2021, when he joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme. McLaren saw enough potential in the young American to support his transition from karting to single-seater racing.
In 2022, Ugochukwu finally became an official single-seater prospect, racing for Carlin in the British F4 Championship. He also raced for Prema Racing in the Italian F4 and the UAE F4 Championship.
In 2024, Ugochukwu stepped up to Formula Regional European and won the Macau Grand Prix.
Ugochukwu makes the transition to F3
In 2025, he finished third overall in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship. He eventually transitioned to F3 as a rookie for Prema, but it was a difficult season that saw him finish 16th overall.
Coincidentally, McLaren also dropped him from their development program.
But the American driver's journey was far from over, as he switched to Campos Racing for 2026. Ugochukwu won at Melbourne and Silverstone, and clinched the title on the final day in Madrid.
Can Ugochukwu get an F1 seat in the near future?
Sure, winning F3 grants Ugochukwu enough Super Licence points to be eligible for F1 practice sessions and reserve roles. His immediate next step will be graduating to Formula 2. If he does well in F2, his F1 stock will surely skyrocket.
Moreover, F1 is currently owned by US-based Liberty Media. They'd want to see an American driver step up and do well in F1.
The key for Ugochukwu is to keep his momentum and focus going, and he will eventually reap the rewards of his efforts.
