The Ferrari team principal assessed the team's performance and admitted that Mercedes has demonstrated a superior level of competitiveness. Vasseur explained the areas in which the Italian team needs to improve.
The start of the 2026 Formula 1 season led to a clear conclusion for Ferrari: the Italian team believes Mercedes' performance in the first races of the championship has created a gap in the competitive balance of the grid.
Frédéric Vasseur, Ferrari's team principal, frankly analyzed the situation after the first race of the year. According to the Frenchman, the level shown by the German team during the Australian Grand Prix weekend made a strong impression on the entire paddock.
"Mercedes is on another planet," he admitted, describing the advantage observed during the first Grand Prix of the championship.
His comment highlighted the contrast between the two teams at the start of the season. While Mercedes quickly established itself as the benchmark for pace, Ferrari is still working to fully exploit the potential of its new car, developed under the 2026 regulations.
Vasseur explained that the difference is most noticeable in the car's pace. According to him, the combination of engine performance, aerodynamic efficiency, and energy management allowed Mercedes to stand out from the very first practice sessions of the weekend.
Even so, the Ferrari team principal made it clear that the situation is not yet settled. "We have to keep working," he stated when assessing the team's performance at the start of the championship.
Vasseur also said that the season is just beginning and that the performance seen at one circuit won't necessarily be replicated at all the others on the calendar.
Ferrari's priority is clear: to understand precisely which areas of the car require faster development. Modern Formula 1 operates with extremely small margins between teams; small improvements in areas such as aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, or tire management can translate into significant differences in race results.
That's why Ferrari is meticulously analyzing the data collected in the first races of the season. Each track session provides valuable information that the engineers can use to improve the car's performance.
Vasseur explained that the team is also trying to understand what factors have allowed Mercedes to gain that initial advantage. He is clear that, to grow as a team, studying the strengths of direct competitors is fundamental to technical development in Formula 1.
"We know what we need to work on," he stated, referring to the areas Ferrari considers priorities for improvement in order to achieve better results.
Despite the difficult start, Ferrari maintains a long-term perspective on the championship. The Formula 1 calendar comprises more than twenty Grands Prix, giving teams time to make improvements and progressively evolve their cars.
Therefore, the team believes that continuous technical development throughout the season will help close the gap observed at the beginning of the year.
Ultimately, Vasseur's statements reflect the current competitive landscape: Mercedes has started the championship with a clear advantage, while Ferrari is focused on development to reduce the gap as the season progresses.
