Struggling to match his rookie teammate's dominance, George Russell reveals the technical adjustments and mental resilience needed to halt Kimi Antonelli’s early charge for the world title.
George Russell was widely regarded as the frontrunner to lead and dominate the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, with Mercedes' engine advantage expected to give him an edge over every rival on the grid. However, reality has told a very different story: it is his own teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who has claimed the majority of victories in this early stretch of the season, consistently outperforming the more experienced British driver and seizing control of the Drivers' Championship.
The 2026 Miami Grand Prix only deepened the concerns surrounding Russell's form, after he once again found himself finishing behind Antonelli at the checkered flag. In the wake of the race, the British driver sat down with Sky Sports to speak candidly about his chances of reversing the trend, closing the gap to his young teammate, and putting himself in a genuine position to compete for the title.
"He [Antonelli] is a fantastic driver and has been exceptionally quick from day one. He won every championship as a junior. I still have confidence in myself — I've been there before. I haven't forgotten how to drive. It's just been a slightly tricky stretch," Russell acknowledged.
"We're four races in, there's still a long way to go, and I think we'll reassess things in the coming weeks. It was a tough race. The start felt good. In those opening laps I was right in the fight, but on the hard tyre I was nowhere. I had some ideas in the final ten laps," he added.
The Briton also pointed to specific technical changes he explored during the race weekend: "We were much more competitive. I made some fairly significant changes to my differentials and brake bias, and I was much closer to what Kimi had been executing all weekend — and it had a bigger impact than I expected. It wasn't a good weekend. I know this circuit is very difficult for me. The real test will come in the races ahead."
How Long Is Kimi Antonelli Under Contract at Mercedes?
Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been handed a new contract extension at Mercedes, effectively silencing the rumors that had surrounded him following a turbulent debut Formula 1 season. The German manufacturer officially confirmed that the Italian youngster will continue alongside George Russell for the 2026 World Championship campaign, putting an end to months of speculation.
Under the new deal, Antonelli is contracted with Mercedes through at least the end of 2026. The one-year extension sends a powerful message about the confidence that team principal Toto Wolff and the Silver Arrows hierarchy have in the 19-year-old's talent.
His future with the team had briefly come into question after a difficult 2025 campaign, with speculation linking Max Verstappen to a potential seat at the Silver Arrows. However, the German outfit has firmly closed that door, doubling down on the Italian prodigy and signaling that they view him as a central figure in their title ambitions — both now and in the seasons to come.
