Wolff weighs in on Kimi Antonelli's meteoric rise and the soaring Ayrton Senna comparisons. Discover his candid assessment of the young prodigy's future.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes Team Principal, has shared his candid thoughts on the growing comparisons between Kimi Antonelli and Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna. The Italian driver's victories in 2026 have sent the hype surrounding the young star soaring, both on and off the track.

In comments made to Reuters, the Mercedes chief gave his honest assessment of Antonelli's true talent — and whether the teenager can live up to the Senna comparisons that have begun to follow him.

"In Italy, of course, everyone wants to talk about World Championships, and the comparisons to Senna — something I don't enjoy reading. He is a 19-year-old who has a very high profile in Italy, and the priority right now is managing expectations and keeping the pressure at a reasonable level, not amplifying it."

"But he handles it very well. He has a great personal environment around him. Within the team, there are moments where we put an arm around him, and moments where we apply more pressure. Overall, everything is coming together as expected. One thing we always try to instil in our drivers is the habit of looking inward first."

"What can I do better? Only then do you look outward. I remember working with George on this when he was still a Williams junior — that was the foundation. With Kimi, we have always been very clear about our objectives."

"The first year was about learning — with some standout performances and some very difficult moments, and we saw exactly that. Now we are in the second year, and he continues to develop in the way we had hoped and anticipated, without inflating expectations to irrational levels."

Why Is Kimi Antonelli Called the 'New Max Verstappen'?

Kimi Antonelli, born in 2006, comes from genuine racing stock. His father Marco was a driver and the owner of AKM Motorsport, a team that competes in the Italian F4 Championship. Antonelli's career began at the age of seven in karting, where he quickly revealed exceptional talent, winning the EasyKart International Grand Final two years later.

Building on that early promise, Antonelli honed his skills in the WSK series and in 2018 won the WSK Champions Cup 60 Mini Final while also claiming victory in the ROK Cup International Final. The following year, he dominated both the WSK Super Master Series and the Euro Series, even finishing fifth in his first appearance at the FIA World Championship.

Those achievements caught the eye of Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who enrolled him in the Mercedes Junior Academy. Antonelli then transitioned to single-seaters in 2021, diving into the Italian and UAE F4 championships. While his Italian campaign yielded consistent podiums, it was in the UAE where he truly shone — taking two victories and finishing third overall.

The following year, Antonelli returned to Italian F4 as a dominant force. He swept the championship with a staggering 13 wins and pole positions in all but a handful of rounds, replicating that success in the ADAC F4 series with nine race wins and 12 podiums to claim that title as well.

All of this laid the groundwork for his place on the Formula 1 grid from 2025, alongside Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, and the rest. Hamilton was one of the first to embrace him, and the two-time world champion Alonso also voiced his thoughts when Antonelli made his debut.
