There aren’t many races where fans go so elaborate with what they wear to the race. There are a few reasons for why they do this, one simply being that it is a way for them to display their appreciation for teams or drivers.
Japanese fans are noted as being some of the most welcoming and dedicated fans, so their outfits, often being handmade, is a way for them to express their appreciation.
It is also a fun take on creative expression and humor. Some fans dress as Ferrari Samurai, others with a fully functional DRS wing, and even some with a full, small-scale F1 car on their heads. These fans are also well appreciated by the teams and drivers, sometimes featured on social media in a sort of best-dressed battle.
This also acts as an extension of Japan’s cosplay and anime culture, in which people dress up in full replica outfits of their favorite characters. The tradition of cosplay is often about taking creativity and love for something to the next level, and it has the same effect on F1.
Seeing all of the different outfits is one of my favorite parts of the Japanese Grand Prix race weekend, and I cannot wait to see what else we see this year.
One of my favorite moments comes from the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix, when a young fan went viral for his interaction with Mercedes driver, George Russell. The young boy was wearing a shirt with George all over it in his iconic T-pose, which became a meme from his 2023 opening title. George and the boy, who frequently attends the race, shared a sweet moment and picture in George's signature T-pose.
Another favorite moment of mine is the mini drivers from the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix. These young fans caught the world's attention for their outfits that perfectly replicate the helmets and race suits of Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris. These kids also caught the drivers' attention, and the mini Charles Leclerc got to meet the real Charles ahead of qualifying, where Charles took a photo and signed his mini-me's helmet. Lewis Hamilton also saw the kids around the paddock and snapped a photo with them.
Some other notable designs are the many fans that show up with mini F1 cars on the top of their hats and those who managed to create full on DRS wings, that were also functional.
