The Italian leads with an 84 point advantage over Russell with seven races remaining, if he extends the difference in Singapore, he could mathematically seal his first championship in the United States.
Kimi Antonelli is increasingly closer to becoming Formula 1 world champion. The Italian Mercedes driver who has led the standings since the third round of the season in Japan, has seen how his advantage widened after his second place and the retirement of his teammate, George Russell, at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, with seven races remaining until the end, Antonelli accumulates 320 points, 84 more than Russell and 106 more than Lewis Hamilton, third in the table.
The Italian has repeated on several occasions that thinking about the title is "exactly what I don't want to do" but the numbers are stubborn. Formula 1's mathematicians have calculated when Antonelli could seal his first world championship and the answer is surprisingly soon: round 18, in the United States, if the right conditions are met.
There are seven events left on the calendar, one of them with a Sprint format (Singapore), which means there are still a maximum of 183 points at stake, for Antonelli to be proclaimed champion in Austin, he would need to extend his advantage over Russell to 100 points or more after the Singapore event. This could be achieved in various ways such as winning the Sprint and the Grand Prix while his teammate does not score in the first but finishes third in Sunday's race, if Antonelli arrives in the United States with that difference and wins the race Russell would have to leave the Circuit of the Americas with zero points for the Italian to mathematically crown himself.
If that combination does not occur the title could come later. Data analysts have calculated what would happen if Antonelli and Russell maintained their average finishing positions of the season, Antonelli's average result in 2026 is currently P1 while Russell's is P3.5. Based on this prediction, the earliest date for Antonelli to be proclaimed champion would be round 19, in Mexico, where he would build an advantage that Russell could not mathematically close before the end of the season.
In addition to Russell and Hamilton three other drivers keep mathematical options of taking the title: Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, however their possibilities are very remote since they would depend on Antonelli not scoring any more points and on them surpassing the Italian's current 320 points. In that scenario all of them would have to wait until the Qatar event to aspire to the championship.
Antonelli, for his part, prefers to stay calm and focus on each race: "Thinking about the title is exactly what I don't want to do" he has repeated on several occasions, his approach is the correct one: not getting ahead of events and continuing to score points to keep his rivals at bay, the next event in Singapore a night urban circuit where tire management and strategy are key, will be an important test for the Italian and for Mercedes, if Antonelli achieves a good result in Marina Bay his path to the title will be practically clear and the dream of becoming the youngest champion in the history of Formula 1 will be closer than ever.
